Intermittent wiper does not work

This manifests itself in long pauses or in the fact that the windshield wiper drive may turn off completely. The most common reason that the intermittent wiper mode does not work is the relay, which counts a certain time interval before turning on. Over time, the contacts on this device begin to oxidize or burn, preventing current from passing through them. The solution to the problem is simple: cleaning the contacts of the relay, which is located in the mounting block of the car. Before cleaning, you must turn off the power by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery.

Removing and installing the windshield wiper trapezoid

If in the Corolla E150 replacing wipers and rubber bands was elementary, then with a trapezoid everything will be more complicated. The trapezoid is a mechanism by which the brushes are driven, that is, it is a kind of lever system. In the E150 body there are no problems with this mechanism, but in the E100 such breakdowns are common.

Symptoms of a faulty trapezoid:

  1. The windshield wiper has stopped handling water or snow.
  2. Noise during operation.
  3. Stains on the glass.
  4. Brush play

How to remove a trapeze? Let's look at removing this mechanism using the 2012 Corolla as an example. You can repair this element by purchasing a repair kit, or buy a completely new one.

The first step for repair or removal is to de-energize the system: disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. After this, you should remove the wiper arms. To do this, the brushes must be in their original position, after which we begin removal. At the base of the levers there is a plastic protection, under which a 14 nut will be located. The plastic can be removed by prying it up with a flat screwdriver, and the lever itself can be removed using a 14 wrench.

Now you need to remove the air supply box:

  1. Open the hood lid.
  1. We remove the insulation.
  2. Behind the insulation it will be visible that the air flow is supported by pistons. If you press their middle with a screwdriver, they will unlock.
  3. Remove the box (it is necessary to remove the left and right parts separately).

The next step to repair the Toyota Corolla windshield wiper trapezoid is to disconnect the wiper drive motor chip, after which you need to unscrew the two bolts securing the trapezoid itself. By detaching the rear rubber holder, you can remove the trapeze from the car.

Twelfth generation Toyota Corolla

Wipers for Toyota Corolla 12th generation

An excellent option is a pair of individual Denso Hybrids: 700 mm (item DU-070L) and 350 mm (item DU-035L). They are reliable, adhere perfectly to the glass, clean well and practically do not freeze in winter. They are produced in Korea. Read more about Denso's range of hybrid windshield wipers.

Buy: → driver's license, → passenger's license.

Valeo hybrid brushes with a length of 700 mm (article 575834) and VFH35 with a length of 350 mm (article 575825) are also a good option. These brushes adhere perfectly to the glass, clean perfectly, and are protected from freezing.

Pay attention to the frameless piece wipers Valeo HydroConnect Upgrade HU70 and HU35 (578582 + 578570). This series replaces the Silencio X-Trm windshield wipers; their only difference is the absence of a wear sensor. They are produced in France. Read more about Valeo Silencio wipers.

Replacing wipers and caring for them

Replacing windshield wipers is required for two reasons:

  • mechanical damage in the structure;
  • wear of the rubber band.

The replacement process depends on the type of fastener used. So the Toyota Corolla E180 windshield wiper with a hook fastening mechanism changes in the following sequence:

We put on the wipers: 1 open the mount, 2 insert the hook, 3 close the mount, 4 ready

  1. The wipers are diverted away from the glass;
  2. Press the latch and remove the cleaning element from the hook;
  3. Insert a new windshield wiper.

You don’t have to replace the entire brushes, but replace only their worn rubber bands.

The replacement procedure is simple. To do this, you will need to remove the elastic band with the retaining longitudinal plates from the frame. Having separated the metal plates, remove the old rubber band and install a new one. Then you will need to install the elastic band clamped by the plates back into the frame of the device.

Only the rubber band can be replaced

To increase the service life of wipers, proper care is required. It consists of the following recommendations:

  • do not turn them on when the glass is dry;
  • do not try to clear ice with them;
  • When parked in winter, bend the cleaning elements away from the glass.

Types of fastenings

To attach windshield wipers on all Corolla models, a 9x3 hook pattern is used. On the wiper body there is a counter part with a plastic lock that fits into the cavity of the hook and keeps the brush from spontaneously unfastening. The fastening mechanism is covered with a plastic cover on top (included in the lock and supplied with the windshield wiper). No other mounting schemes were used on the Corolla.

The wipers have a counter part with a plastic retainer.

Detailed instructions for DIY replacement

To perform the work you must:

  1. Approach from the side and carefully move the arm with the wiper away from the surface of the windshield.
  2. Lift the cover and turn the brush at a right angle to the guide, and then pull the wiper off the hook, overcoming the resistance of the latch. When removing, you must hold the leash with your hand, since the steel arm may break the windshield if it slips.
  3. Clean the mounting surface of any rust or road grime and install a new wiper blade (with hook adapter pre-installed). Make sure the latch engages and snap the lid into place.
  4. Remove the protective cover from the rubber strip and lower the arm with the installed windshield wiper into the working position.
  5. Repeat the procedure on the other side of the car and check the operation of the windshield wipers.
