Front and rear calipers of Toyota Corolla 110, troubleshooting and restoration of calipers Toyota Corolla Levin AE101 for Toyota Corolla 100

Much has been said about the importance of uninterrupted operation of all elements responsible for applying the brake. This article will talk about repairing the components of the caliper: the piston (cylinder), guides and replacing their boot - with your own hands, you can also learn about this clearly from the attached video.

To fully understand how to easily repair and replace these parts, it is worth understanding the structure of the front and rear calipers and the reasons for their failure, and what repair kit may be required for this.

Toyota Corolla 150 caliper guides

Hi all.
Finally got around to the brakes. The day before we purchased: 1) Front brake discs Ate 24.0122-0256.1 Rear brake disc Ate 24.0109-0155.1 2) ATE Paste for caliper piston 03.9902-0511.2 ATE Anti-squeak grease for brakes 03.9902-1001.2 LUCAS/TRW Plastic lubricant 25g for caliper guides PFG110 3) Remsa front pads 1232.00 Remsa rear pads 1286.02

He carried out all the work in his yard under the entrance. I didn’t have time to take many photos, because I wanted to finish everything quickly)) I climbed into the brakes for the first time in my life, everything is simple and intuitive, except for the rear calipers. It’s good that I read the information on the rear pistons that they can only be crushed by screwing the piston in clockwise (since they sit on a threaded guide bolt).

1) I don’t have a lot of tools, but even that was enough. What I used: 19 socket with a wrench, for removing wheels Combination wrench 14 (I recommend a socket, but I didn’t have one, I unscrewed it with what I had) WD40 Pipe to put on the wrench, to strengthen the lever, it was difficult to tear off the nuts securing the bracket calipers A small D8 bolt, like (for screwing into the old brake disc so that it comes off the hub) a hammer, pliers, a rag, a pry bar...

2) I will briefly describe the work done: 1. First of all (for the front axle), after removing the wheels, I crushed the pistons of the front calipers, because then it is problematic to do this on the removed caliper body. First, I stuck a screwdriver between the piston and the old block and pressed the piston 1-2mm in order to insert the pry bar there. Then, using a pry bar, he carefully pressed the piston to the end, and similarly on the other side. 2. Next, unscrew the 2 bolts (14) that hold the caliper body to the bracket, hang the body on a wire tie, by the spring so as not to interfere, take it out and throw away the old pads.

3. Unscrew the 2 bolts (nuts), also 14mm, that hold the caliper bracket, I most likely never had them removed, I tore them off using a pipe. I removed the bracket, cleaned it with a metal brush, removed the interfering rust, also cleaned the metal guides for the pads and lubricated them with “Plastitube” lubricant, which is an Ate anti-squeak lubricant. 4. I took out the caliper guide, cleaned it with a cloth, removed the old pieces of grease, lubricated the guide with PFG110 grease (no need to lubricate much), put it back, put on the old boot, it runs great!) 5. Old brake discs can be knocked down with a hammer, but it’s easier to screw them into special ones holes in the disc with a bolt (by the way, it fits from the caliper, but I wouldn’t spoil it) and the disc itself will fly off the hub, I throw away the disc, install a new one and first attach it to two wheel nuts.

I didn’t do anything to the pistons, the boots are intact, and so are the pistons, maybe I’ll service them next year, so the piston lubricant hasn’t come in handy yet. Next, I assembled everything - installed the caliper, lubricated the brake pads with “plastic tube” in the places where they move along the guides of the caliper, stuck the pads in, put on the caliper body, tightened everything and it’s done!

On the rear axle, all the actions are identical, the only difference is that we need to disconnect the caliper body, and then crush the pistons, I crushed it stupidly by turning the piston clockwise with pliers - at first it was tight, but then like clockwork. Of all the guide boots, only the front one on the driver's side was torn, which means the guide was soured. A beginner may have a question about how to get it, there is no need to suffer and try to unscrew it. We take a gas burner with a similar canister

And we warm the place where the guide is located well for several minutes. Then we pour water on it, clamp the bracket in a vice, and easily take out the guide by turning it a little. Simple physics, the guide is steel, and the bracket is cast iron, the steel cools faster (it tapers faster after heating) and therefore comes out easier. Essentially a soured ejection guide + replacement of the boot. But I left everything old for now until the repair kit arrived. During the repair, I also ordered: Lower front caliper guide (with rubber) Toyota 47715-12A10 4 pcs anthers + 2 pcs bushings for caliper guides BBP 16447K

The rear caliper cylinder is screwed into your car, watch the video, just do it carefully, do not tear the rubber boot. And another piece of advice, it is better to install a block with a squeak (plate) from the inside, on the piston side, since the inner block wears out faster and is more difficult to visually inspect than the outer block.

If the brakes rattle

This type of brake has pressure springs or floating calipers.

They are responsible for securing the pads to the caliper body. The reason for their failure is metal fatigue or poor quality. As a result, they lose their elasticity and stop pressing the pads against the body. Because of this, the pads rattle at the slightest passage of irregularities and may come into uneven contact with the disc, which will lead to the appearance of a shoulder or grooves on it. Also in this case, the staples themselves may rattle.

What should you do when your brake calipers or pads rattle? If it is not possible to replace them, then you should try to loosen them with your own hands using pliers to make them more rigid. To do this, you need to pull them out of their seats, unclench them and insert them into place, after which they will stop rattling for a while.

Toyota Corolla is one of the best selling cars. Like all representatives of the Toyota Motors line, the Corolla is very reliable and durable. Due to its unique marketability, it was included in the Guinness Book of Records. The model is sold in 140 countries.

The first generation of this popularly beloved Japanese model appeared back in 1966. It was a rear-wheel drive car with a longitudinal engine. In 1984, the Japanese automaker introduced the first modification with front-wheel drive. In total, the car was produced in five body types: sedan, 3-door and 5-door hatchback, liftback, station wagon.

Causes of failure

The caliper as an element of disc brakes is subjected to significant temperature loads, as well as exposure to external adverse factors: dirt, dust, moisture, chemicals. All this happens due to the fact that his device does not allow him to be protected from these negative phenomena. If there is significant overheating, as well as if the boot ruptures, the lubrication of the guides may disappear.

Improper maintenance of the guides, in which some craftsmen manage to stuff inappropriate lubricant into their boots: graphite or similar, leads to their swelling and souring, after which they jam or knock when suddenly activated.

A rupture of the piston boot causes dirt and moisture to enter it. After which it stops working - it starts to jam or, conversely, knock.

Deformation of the sealing ring contributes to brake fluid leakage and oiling of the pads.

Repair kit for caliper

The lack of original repair kits for calipers does not depend on the status of the automaker.
With equal success, the brake mechanism can be officially considered beyond repair in both an exclusive sports car and a budget city sedan. Brake caliper wells

There is a myth among car owners that the walls of the caliper wells cannot be treated in any way.
They say that you can damage the factory mirror, which cannot be restored later. In fact, the walls of the well are just the walls of a cavity and they have little in common with the engine cylinders. The brake fluid pressure is maintained only by the inner cuff and the piston wall. There is a myth among car owners that the walls of the caliper wells cannot be treated in any way. The last limitation when repairing a caliper is the integrity of its body. It is often damaged by inexperienced servicemen when installing/dismantling the unit. It is not economically feasible to restore the body and no one can vouch for the quality.

Calipers with a built-in handbrake mechanism are also restored, even if it is electric. In fact, both versions have similar problems. The electric version only adds problems with motor failure, and the drives turn sour the same way in both cases. You can find spare parts on the market: these are either individual elements or repair kits. At the same time, some automakers even produce original parts. The situation with motors is more complicated, but you can always find a good used option.

There is also a common myth that it is impossible to restore calipers with a built-in handbrake mechanism, especially if it is electric. In fact, specialized services have long been proficient in this matter. Nature has the necessary spare parts and the repair technology has been developed.

Restoring a caliper at some companies involves sandblasting it and applying spray paint to make it look like it just came off the assembly line. The price of the service is included in the total cost of repairs.

The service of painting calipers with powder paint is also common. Usually it is done simultaneously with the repair of components. After processing in a sandblasting chamber, paint is applied to the caliper. By agreement with the client, a layer of primer can be applied before this, then the coating will last longer, but the cost of the work will be higher. After applying the powder paint, the caliper is “baked” in an oven and then cooled indoors at room temperature. Next, the logo is glued on and the final coating is done with polymer varnish.

Some companies offer their remanufactured calipers. Moreover, they give them a decent two-year warranty. A rebuilt front single-piston caliper costs approximately 3,500–4,500 rubles, and a rear version with an integrated handbrake mechanism costs about 6,000 rubles. By the way, the last example in a new box for some models of budget cars costs as much as 40,000 rubles.
