2021 Toyota Sequoia gets a minor upgrade

The model range of Toyota cars for the 2018-2019 model year has been replenished with the updated Toyota Sequoia. Well-known Japanese developers were involved in the design of this car. To date, experts claim that a machine of this status has not yet been produced with equal technical equipment.

In this article we will try to reveal the main characteristics, external and internal attractions, and also present photos and costs.

This SUV successfully passed all tests and revealed the following advantages:

  1. Interesting appearance;
  2. Big sizes;
  3. Powerful design;
  4. High security system.

Toyota Sequoia, as before, has the same popularity and undeniable authority. Let's take a closer look at the differences that exist in the modification in question:

— body dimensions have increased; — the presence of a more advanced lighting system (LEDs and bi-xenon headlights); — the front bumper is equipped with an interesting hole depicted like a smile, which adds some charm to the design; — Aluminum frame of the false radiator grille; — Convenient platform for boarding passengers inside the car; — The door handles are made of high-quality plastic and match the color of the body; — The presence of wide rear-view mirrors provides increased visibility; — Interesting tailgate design. The opening button is located in a special container under the platform with the car's license plates; it is also worth noting the side lighting, which has 2 headlight strips.

It is worth noting that the modifications that occurred to the car deserve the highest ratings and praise.

Of course, after a visual inspection, you want to look inside the cabin and enjoy the positive emotions; besides, there is something to look at. Engineers claim that all improvements and updates to the 2021 Toyota Sequoia were developed taking into account the wishes of car enthusiasts of this model. We invite you to get to know us in more detail:

— The seats for the driver and passengers have increased in size and become more comfortable; — The multimedia system has acquired a wide display format; — The multifunctional dashboard is located in a place convenient for the driver; — The steering wheel is equipped with only the necessary buttons, there are no unnecessary decorations and sensors; — The presence of heating systems at different levels of the cabin, heating such a space is now not difficult; — Some control sensors are placed in the door cavities so that the driver is not distracted while driving.

New in 2021

This year, the Sequoia gets the Safety Sense-P suite of safety systems, which adds automatic emergency braking, lane change warning with lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitoring and a cross-traffic alert system are also included. The TRD Sport trim level has joined the lineup.

How we tested the 2018 Toyota Sequoia

Driving impressions

Driving a large SUV isn't comparable to driving a crossover, but the modern Sequoia is surprisingly easy to drive. Despite its considerable dimensions, the SUV corners confidently, and the independent rear suspension minimizes body roll. True, such settings caused a rough ride. The situation improves with the air suspension of the Toyota Sequoia Platinum model, but the price for it in 2018 is quite high. The steering is fairly accurate, although it does feel a little heavy at low speeds. A pleasant factor was the reliable sound insulation. A standard rearview monitor, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert provide reliable assistance when maneuvering.

Technical characteristics of Toyota Sequoia

Toyota Sequoia has really powerful technical equipment, let's look at the main indicators of the engine:

— power output 400 horsepower; — volume 6 liters; — torque 600 rpm; — all-wheel drive system that ensures smooth off-road driving; — presence of a six-speed gearbox.

However, such advanced technical equipment has a small drawback - it is high gasoline consumption, because a car requires 17 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. This consumption is determined by the large dimensions and massive cylinder bodies. An independent suspension is installed on both sides of the car. Manufacturers offer car enthusiasts the installation of a pneumatic suspension design for convenience.

Best Features

Large SUVs cost a lot, so it's good to know that your massive investment will retain its value for a long time. Excellent reliability and endurance indicators also play in Sequoia's favor.

While some manufacturers still offer expensive packages and standalone models to get the safety and assistance systems they want, Toyota has made the TSS-P suite standard on all Sequoias. This includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic braking, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control and lane change warning.

Technical characteristics of Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia, originally created for North American drivers, has long been firmly established in the domestic market thanks to its impressive appearance and more than satisfactory technical characteristics for its price.

Sequoia's debut on sale took place in 2000, although it was announced as a 2001 model. The developers took the first generation of another Toyota Motor Corporation car as a basis - the full-size Toyota Tundra pickup truck. These two “Japanese Americans” have many common points, but they differ, as has already become clear, mainly in the rear. In 2008, the second generation of the car was born. In 2021, the car was restyled, which mainly affected the headlights, radiator grille, foglights and laser cruise control system. The car of the 2021 version has not changed, with the exception of the appearance of the “military” modification TRD PRO in matte green.

ENGINE Over a decade and a half, the technical characteristics of the Toyota Sequoia have undergone some changes: the current generation is represented by an SUV with the most powerful V8 engine (DOHC 32-valve i-FORCE V8 with dual independent VVT-i system) with a volume of 5.7 liters, which at 5600 rpm produces 381 horsepower. The transmission is an automatic electronic six-speed, as in the Lexus GX570. Unfortunately, the car is not presented in a diesel engine version, which is strange, because the TOYOTA 4.5 turbo engine has proven itself very well as an economical and powerful engine.

GASOLINE If you live in the USA, then you can fill your car with low-octane 86-octane gasoline, but for the countries of the former CIS this is at least 92-octane gasoline, or even 95, which is what owners usually drive Toyota Sequoia. By the way, the volume of the fuel tank here is 100 liters, and many call the consumption relatively small for such a giant, although there are opposing opinions according to which the car has poor aerodynamics due to its ill-conceived design, which is the reason for the high consumption even at high speed . Therefore, we present the numbers by which you will have to draw your own conclusions.

FUEL CONSUMPTION When driving around the city, the computer data ranges from 19 to 25 liters per 100 kilometers. Traffic jams, which are common for residents of megacities, as well as the desire of some owners to drive on the roads significantly increase consumption. For those who are afraid of going broke on fuel, it is better to leave all sorts of jerks and maneuvers to sedan drivers. On the highway, of course, the consumption will be somewhat lower. The speed in the Toyota Sequoia is practically not felt: even at 150 km/h on a flat road, the car still moves smoothly, so for extreme sports enthusiasts, the manufacturer has set the speedometer limit to 195 km/h, just in case. At this speed limit, you can achieve a consumption of 15-17 liters per 100 kilometers. More economical is the all-wheel drive version of the Sequoia, where the rear-wheel drive is permanent and the front-wheel drive is switchable. I, as the author of the article, will try to present my personal impressions after several years of using the car. This consumption is indicated in the mode of disabling all-wheel drive, when the car is driving in rear-wheel drive. Driving around the city If driving occurs at night, outside the city, in small towns, or without traffic congestion, provided there are no sudden jerks or braking, the consumption is 19 liters per 100 km. Driving around the city during rush hour If you live in a large city and every morning you “storm” the way to work in a continuous traffic jam, provided there are no sudden jerks and braking, the consumption will be 25 liters per 100 km. Driving in active mode Are you tearing up? Are you actively maneuvering? Get ready for 30 liters per 100 km. Driving on the highway If you adhere to the speed limit of 120-140 km/h, the consumption will be 17 liters per 100 km. Well, then, it’s directly proportional. At a speed of 180 km.h. consumption will be about 25 liters per 100 km.

DYNAMICS It is worth noting that this SUV accelerates instantly: after the first 7 seconds of driving, you can easily reach a speed of 100 km/h.

BODY Continuing to list the technical characteristics of the Toyota Sequoia , one cannot help but praise the high quality galvanized metal from which the body is made. The SUV measures 5.2 meters in length, 2.03 meters in width, and 1.85 meters in height. The ground clearance in the new generation version is 254 millimeters, in the basic version it is 10 millimeters less. By the way, this factor does not at all affect the ease of boarding: by opening the door almost 90 degrees, you can easily get in and out of the cabin.

  • Machine length 5.209 meters
  • Machine width 2.026 meters
  • Height 1.894 meters
  • Wheelbase 3.098 meters
  • Net weight 2,741 kg.
  • The maximum permissible curb weight of the vehicle is 3,311 kg.
  • The maximum weight of a towed object is 3,991 kg.
  • Ground clearance (bottom height above the surface) 24.38 centimeters

The car's own weight of 2,741 kg can load a full trunk of cargo or seat 8 people, including the driver. The curb weight of the Sequoia allows 2599-2735 kilograms, depending on which version we are talking about, in addition, it can tow an object weighing almost 4 tons (no more than 3,991 kg).

SUSPENSION TOYOTA SEQUOIA, like the Land cruiser Prado, is available in two trim levels - with rear air suspension and without rear air suspension. If the car is equipped with air suspension, it rides noticeably softer. It has three operating modes: “sport”, “normal”, “comfort”. It is recommended to turn on the “sport” mode when driving on mountainous and winding roads, when driving fast, or in strong crosswinds. The “normal” mode is used for everyday driving. The “comfort” mode should be turned on on rough roads or when driving off-road. By switching modes, you essentially change only the stiffness of the air suspension. It is also possible to raise and lower the rear of the car by 3 centimeters. The manufacturer recommends lowering the car when unloading and loading, although in reality this is purely a marketing ploy. It’s unlikely that 3 centimeters will help you load the trunk more conveniently. It is recommended to raise the suspension when driving over obstacles. Remember that when driving above 30 km/h, the car will drop back to its normal position. It is not recommended to frequently switch air suspension modes, as this creates an increased load on the compressor. For example, I really like the ability of the air suspension to maintain a constant ground clearance of the car, regardless of the load in the car. Thus, there are two options for the rear suspension: 1. Spring, two-link, independent with low-pressure gas shock absorbers and Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension (H-TEMS) pneumatic elements 2. Spring, two-lever, independent with low-pressure gas shock absorbers. The front suspension in any version is rigidly fixed, spring, double-wishbone. The machine is equipped with front and rear anti-roll bars. Like all the best SUV cars, the car is made using “Body on frame” technology. Simply put, the car has a frame on which the wheels are attached, but the body is not rigidly attached to the frame. This technology has been used since 1960 to make SUVs more reliable when driving off-road.

EQUIPMENT The Sequoia's equipment is very rich, and the interior with traditional leather trim looks expensive, elegant and solid. In addition to a multimedia system with navigation and a rear-view camera, 10 airbags and three-zone climate control, the interior is literally crammed with modern equipment and various gadgets. Even the luggage compartment is ventilated, there is a TV in the ceiling, heated under the electrically adjustable seats, and the JBL audio system has as many as 14 speakers! The only drawback is that the quality of the “dashboard”, it is unclear why in such an expensive and prestigious car Toyota used ordinary black plastic with gray inserts instead of vinyl trim.

OFF-ROAD QUALITIES Despite its significant dimensions, Sequoia is a full-fledged and correct SUV, assembled on a powerful frame. It is enough to see the car from below (the size and thickness of the suspension elements) to understand: it is not afraid of off-road conditions. The car has all-wheel drive, differential locks and, of course, low-range gearing. The powerful engine will lift the car to any conceivable angle and help pull friends out of the mud. Of course, the car from the showroom is not quite suitable for a trophy. Offroad enthusiasts traditionally redo the bumpers, install the “correct” tires and lift the car. In general, there are many advantages for travelers, but the disadvantages include, of course, weight and size. The car will perform well in the mountains or desert, but it will be difficult for it in swamps and impenetrable forests.

DRIVING ON THE ROUTE The car is very comfortable and convenient for high-speed driving over long distances. The car is heavy and large, so potholes and unevenness on domestic roads will not be noticeable. Of course, as with any SUV, it’s best to take turns at speed carefully. According to my personal feelings, the car maneuvers much more confidently compared to, for example, the Prado. It is wider and the center of gravity is lower. The powerful engine allows you to confidently overtake cars at any speed range. Of the minuses, this is, of course, consumption, Sequoia is not a model of streamlining and therefore the higher the speed, the greater the consumption will be. Ideally, on the highways, keep the speed at 120-140 km/h, but in Germany I had to drive for 12 hours at a speed of 180 km/h. At the same time, there were no problems with the axles or transfer case, and the six-speed gearbox perfectly maintained low revs. The car cannot go more than 180 - it has a speed limiter. From the hills I managed to accelerate to 200, but probably the limiter is there for a reason and it’s not worth tormenting the SUV at high speeds. Let me emphasize once again that you can drive that car for a day and you won’t feel tired.

SEQUOIA ON GAS Despite the initial skepticism towards gas, after some time almost all the members of our club installed gas equipment for themselves. For a 5.7 liter engine, the savings are VERY noticeable. My personal consumption during mixed driving is 24 liters of gas per 100 kilometers, which corresponds to the operation of a regular passenger car on gasoline. When traveling abroad on Sequoia, the savings are very noticeable. I refueled in Finland, Norway and Turkey with local gas and the car behaved perfectly. A toroidal tank instead of a spare tire with a capacity of 92 liters of gas is ideal for Sequoia. But with the spare tire you will have to decide something. On trips you have to take it in the trunk, where it takes up a lot of space. Due to the large savings, the installation of gas equipment pays for itself in literally a year.
