In 1999, Toyota showed the world the new Yaris model, which quickly became the car of the year in Europe and Japan. Six years later, manufacturers released the second generation Yaris, which was supposed to surpass its predecessor. It has many differences, one of which is the automatic clutch transmission.
This feature, namely the “Multimod” box, has become the subject of controversy among many car owners.
So what to choose, automatic or robot?
Many argue that the new Multimod gearbox is not inferior to an automatic transmission in terms of convenience, and is also close to a manual transmission in terms of fuel consumption and driving dynamics. But this opinion is wrong. A robot cannot be compared with a machine gun. Multimode is a simple mechanics with automatic clutch control.
Due to this, many people do not like jerking while driving. In order to avoid this, you need to clearly monitor the switching points and release the gas. In addition, you will need to use the handbrake, which many people no longer remember about on an automatic. As for ascents and descents, it is better to move along them in manual mode.
Choice when buying a Toyota Yaris automatic or robot
everyone does it for themselves. The machine has its pros and cons, just like the multimode box.

Toyota Yaris robotic automatic transmission
I read the nonsense that is written by mechanical beggars on this forum and who have never smelled a robot, that I had to register to answer.
So, what is a robot?! This is a CONVENTIONAL MECHANICAL TRANSMISSION, but gear shifting is carried out by servos (motors) at the command of the electronics. but good robotic gearboxes are only installed on Toyotas, and they also work faster than an automatic transmission and do not reduce power.
Last year there was a choice: to buy a car not with a manual, but with an automatic one. Since there were no normal options for buying a car, and only the Yaris was in the budget, I decided to go with it. I bought this wonderful device for 350 rubles. with mileage of 50 thousand. Due to my inexperience, I didn’t notice that there was no help when starting, and this is the first sign that the robot is not working properly. As a result, at 100 thousand, the “gear” lights up - an indicator of a robot malfunction. We tow the car and, with the engine running in neutral, tow the car from Zhukovsky to Moscow to the “unofficials”. THE ROBOT CAN BE TOWED!
After the diagnosis, I was told that I was “selected” for a replacement robot. I felt bad because... For the officials, replacing a robot costs ~110t.r. The cost of replacing the robot includes (from the officials):
-Replacement of the robot controller 30-50t.r.
-Replacement of the clutch actuator 30-40 t.r.
-Replacement of clutch 20t.r.
+work
But the unofficials made me happy: It turns out that the clutch actuator (namely, this electric motor becomes unusable after a mileage of 60-100 thousand) costs only 8-10 thousand rubles. The controller works perfectly and there is no need to change it, by the way, the “robot brains” are also quite inexpensive - 20 thousand rubles. and they break very rarely. + I ordered a replacement clutch.
Total:
-Replacement of actuator 10t.r.
-Replacement of clutch 12t.r.
+work
=
26600 rub.
When changing gears, the robot has slight “blunts” in cases where you drive in Es (Easy sport) mode or press the gas pedal all the way to the floor, then the engine spins up to 6-7 thousand and there will really be “glitches” when shifting. In normal driving mode, half-pressing the speed shift pedal is practically not felt.
The robots in Toyotas are very high quality and “long-lasting”; there are no hydraulic drives, as in Opel’s isitronics. Repairing an actuator is a cheap affair, it breaks due to the fact that the brushes wear out, new ones come from Lada cars, and due to inexperience I bought a new one. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 7-8 liters per 100 km. You can use both 95 and 92 gasoline - the consumption remains the same. Yarises are very spacious inside. In maximum configurations they are equipped with 9 airbags. The only thing is that the robot needs to be retrained about 2 times a year. This is due to the fact that the clutch wears out over time and the robot needs to be retrained for new gaps, otherwise it starts to twitch and its service life ends faster, and the starting assistance disappears. If, after releasing the brake pedal, the car does not roll to 10 km/h, then either the robot has not been retrained or will soon die.
Another feature is that in winter the robot must be driven in “manual” mode, otherwise if there is slipping, the robot immediately begins to “play” with speeds, thinking that the driver has decided to accelerate, and as soon as the wheels “grab” and the slipping disappears, the robot drops the gear to 1 and this can be done ad infinitum.
Therefore, having started in manual mode at 1-2 speeds, we go out onto the road and only there we put the box in automatic mode, otherwise you will ruin the clutch and the robot. The robot has this “trick” that has helped me out more than once: if you are stuck on ice and you can’t get out of a hole while skidding, then you can put the gearbox in 2nd gear and in 70% of cases you can get out of it without the help of others. The robot is not as scary as the devils who don’t deal with it make it out to be. The robot's service life is up to 120 thousand km. Repair price 20-30 tr. taking into account app. parts. The entire example is given for the Toyota Yaris. Modified April 26, 2013 by Locky
Toyota Yaris robotic gearbox and its features
Multimode is conventional mechanics with the addition of drives controlled by electric motors. With its help, automatic clutch control is possible. Two modes of automatic and manual switching are possible.
The multimod can also operate in emergency mode. When the TCM detects a malfunction, it activates the warning lamp, informing the driver that a malfunction has occurred. If necessary, the malfunction lamp turns on along with the control lamp.
At the same time, the risk of an accident is reduced by preventing the loss of emergency control.
The switch lever of the multimode is equipped with a “Shift-by-Wire” system, which determines the set position of the lever and issues a signal to the TCM. The lever also has a locking mechanism. If the ignition is turned off, and if there is no pressure on the brake, when the engine is running in the neutral position of the lever, it is automatically locked into the neutral position. When the clutch temperature exceeds the set values, the multimod activates the buzzer and displays information about clutch overheating using a warning lamp.
No matter which transmission you choose, the Toyota Yaris remains a quality Japanese car.
Review of Toyota Yaris 1.3 16v VVT-i (2007)
I want to write a few, as it seems to me, interesting and useful words for potential buyers of a used Yaris (from 2005 to 2011).
The purchase was accidental. I was looking for a second car for the family, the requirements were “automatic”, “conditon” and technical condition, so as not to look under the hood for at least three years. Budget about 300 thousand rubles. I didn't initially consider Toyota. It’s not that I don’t like the brand, but for me Toyota is a simple, cheap (in the sense of not expensive) car. But in Russia, Toyota is also “drive your dream” and, therefore, + 15% to the price tag. The same goes for the secondary.
However, fate turned in such a way that friends of friends were selling Yaris with an absolutely transparent history, low mileage and for 340 thousand rubles, I had to take it.
So, 1.3 engine, robotic gearbox, air conditioning. Over the past four months, our Yaris has driven 10 thousand km. and went through one service every 50 thousand km. total mileage.
The first thing I had to do after the purchase was initialize the box. Surprisingly, many owners of Toyotas with robots do not know what it is and change the clutch unit at minimum mileage. Also, the previous owners of the Yaris suffered for a year (!) with the box tugging and eventually sold the car, but I spent 500 rubles + two hours and the box works just fine. One piece of advice - initialization should be trusted only to officials.
As for the gearbox itself, it’s a classic robot with a single-plate clutch, very twitchy and with long delays when switching. Among the advantages are low fuel consumption and two pedals. In general, there is no need to have any illusions - a robot with one clutch is the worst automatic machine.
The engine is quite decent - dull in the bottom and quite peppy at the top. It can easily carry a cart weighing 1 ton.
I was pleased with the suspension. For this class of car it is quite soft and copes well with paving stones, rails, potholes, etc. But this is all in the city; on the highway the car is frankly useless. If the road is rutted, then you have to constantly catch the car on the road, and even the windage, in general, overtaking is dangerous and you will not get any pleasure from driving. I think that 90 km/h is a limit beyond which there is no point in going over.
Sound insulation is terrible. You can say no. The wind, the noise from under the wheels, the noise of cars passing by, and what have you - even soft music in the cabin can be clearly heard from outside through the doors!
The interior for the front passengers is very spacious for this class of car, in the back everything is much worse, three of you definitely won’t get far, but there’s enough space for two short people. I categorically don’t like the seats, neither their shape nor their customization capabilities; they are definitely not suitable for a more or less long journey. Everything else is fine, nothing rattles or creaks, there are a lot of drawers, overall the ergonomics of the cabin are good.
I don’t like the brakes, they are quite effective, but the pedal travel is not uniform in the braking force; when pressed gradually, uniform braking first follows, and then at some point the braking increases sharply, which leads to a jerk. I managed to get used to the brake pedal and avoid jerking only after a few weeks! Also, the brake pedal has an unusual property of moving when pressed for a long time, but this, as I understand it, is a design feature.
The official Toyota service deserves special mention. I was serviced by three official services in our city - Ford, Volkswagen and Toyota. And if I can safely call the first two unsatisfactory, then Toyota was a pleasant surprise. In my opinion, today in Kaliningrad this is the best official service, and it’s not just about the ability to lick the client, a guest area with free coffee and computers connected to the Internet, the main thing is high-quality technical service and reasonable prices. I don’t want to idealize, there are probably enough deer there too, in particular, the noodles that the service consultant gave me before initializing the box would have been enough for dinner, but the prices and quality of the work performed erase all the shortcomings, I confidently give a rating of 4+ for the service.
Review of Toyota Yaris (2007)
First own family car. I've been driving for 4 months, mileage 8,000 km. The choice of model was determined by the dimensions - I wanted my first car to be compact, but have enough space for the whole family and have everything necessary for comfort - a leather steering wheel, all sorts of small gadgets and, an extremely pleasant bells and whistle, parking sensors.
Advantages:
Compactness allows you to fit into almost any “hole,” especially if there are parking sensors that show the distance to objects and warn about a critical distance. Quiet engine and good sound insulation. Amazing economy - gasoline consumption in the city is 5-6 liters, and on the highway in sport mode over long distances 4 liters, although sometimes it feels like it’s actually even less! The small turning radius - less than 2 meters - allows you to turn around without delays on a two-lane road of normal width. There is a lot of space inside - this fact is noted by every second passenger, who is surprised to compare the compact dimensions with the feeling of spaciousness inside. Digital speedometer - I immediately got used to it, and no longer wanted to switch to a regular, analog one. The windows do not sweat when the air conditioner is on, regardless of whether it is on heat or cold.
Flaws:
The first negative impression is that it is impossible to start quickly, although over time you get used to it. If you mechanically press the pedal too hard, the electronics switches on another mode, resulting in the initial acceleration even slower. Real acceleration from 3rd gear. But after a month or two this does not interfere at all, especially since the model was originally designed for urban conditions. And if you’re in a hurry, you turn on the sport mode, which speeds up acceleration somewhat.
Extremely small luggage compartment. Fits 2 suitcases. Although, like other shortcomings, this is a completely logical point. This is a compact city model, not a truck! If you really want, of course, the rear seats fold down, plus you can squeeze out a little more space by removing the first “floor” in the luggage compartment - plus 10-15 cm vertically. All other shortcomings are also due to the type - the fundamental lack of cruise control, the average ground clearance (it seems about 12 cm), due to which, when parking at a curb of even medium height, the front bumper “scratches”, although some “terrible” holes are surprisingly “they take it” It is for this reason that when buying my next car I will aim for a higher clearance (probably RAV4), and this one will go to my wife. Moreover, girls usually drive Yaris.
The maximum speed is officially, it seems, 155. I accelerated to this speed and it was possible to squeeze out another +20 km without any problems, but I didn’t want to anymore - on a night, uneven and winding road.
The conclusion and overall impression is very positive, especially if there are bells and whistles. You become imbued with respect for Toyota, and the existing disadvantages are quite natural (already wrote above). Personally, I also really like the design. An excellent family car in urban environments, although the Mercedes A-Class is arguably superior in most respects.
