Other malfunctions of Avensis T220
Gearboxes are durable if you don't torture them with racing.
Gradually, the differential still breaks, and in some cases it even breaks the housing. On base engines, the right axle shaft rots. The steering is the most troublesome, it all starts with the tips and gradually reaches the power steering pump and the rack itself. The suspension is durable, of course you will have to change the stabilizers, but they are considered consumables on all cars. The chassis runs for a long time, requiring interventions only due to natural wear and tear. The main problem is rear subframe rot.
The electrics of the first Avensis suffer, but it concerns little things - the rear windshield wiper motor of the hatchback/station wagon, the ignition switch equipment and other little things.

Reviews from Russian owners of Toyota Avensis Coupe cars
Review of Toyota Avensis, 2009 Good health to all! In June 2018, the Rassat B7 with a 1.8 engine on a DSG7, which was owned for only a couple of months and with a mileage of 100,000 km, began to die rapidly. To be honest, I was hoping to drive it for at least a year, but the engine just started burning oil incredibly. Sold.

Video review
Toyota Avensis ground clearance or ground clearance, as for any other passenger car, is an important factor on our roads. It is the condition of the road surface or its complete absence that makes Russian car enthusiasts interested in the ground clearance of the Toyota Avensis and the possibility of increasing ground clearance using spacers or urethane autobuffers.
To begin with, it’s worth honestly saying that the actual ground clearance of a Toyota Avensis may differ significantly from that declared by the manufacturer. The whole secret is in the method of measuring and where to measure ground clearance. Therefore, you can find out the real state of affairs only by arming yourself with a tape measure or ruler. The official ground clearance of Toyota Avensis varies between generations.
- Ground clearance Toyota Avensis 2.0 l. since 2002 – 150 mm
- Ground clearance Toyota Avensis 2.4 l. since 2002 – 140 mm
- Ground clearance of Toyota Avensis since 2006 – 155 mm
- Ground clearance of Toyota Avensis since 2008 – 140 mm
- Ground clearance of Toyota Avensis since 2011 – 140 mm
Models specially adapted for Russia have reinforced suspension. Cars created for Japan have less clearance.
Some manufacturers use a trick and declare the amount of ground clearance in an “empty” car, but in real life we have a trunk full of all kinds of things, passengers and a driver. That is, in a loaded car the ground clearance will be completely different. Another factor that few people take into account is the age of the car and the wear and tear of the springs—their “sagging” due to age. The issue can be resolved by installing new springs or purchasing spacers for sagging Toyota Avensis springs. Spacers allow you to compensate for spring subsidence and add a couple of centimeters of ground clearance. Sometimes even an inch of curb parking makes a difference.
But you shouldn’t get carried away with “lifting” the ground clearance of the Toyota Avensis, because spacers to increase ground clearance are focused only on springs
If you do not pay attention to the shock absorbers, the travel of which is often very limited, then independently upgrading the suspension can lead to loss of controllability and damage to the shock absorbers. From the point of view of cross-country ability, high ground clearance in our harsh conditions is good, however, at high speeds on the highway and in corners, serious sway and additional body roll appear

Detailed video of installing urethane autobuffers to increase ground clearance on a Toyota Avensis.
Any car manufacturer, when designing the suspension and choosing the ground clearance, looks for a middle ground between handling and cross-country ability. Perhaps the simplest, safest and most unpretentious way to increase clearance is to install wheels with “high” tires. Changing wheels makes it easy to increase the ground clearance by another centimeter. Do not forget that a serious change in ground clearance can lead to damage to Toyota Avensis CV joints. After all, the “grenades” will have to work from a slightly different angle. But this only applies to the front axle.
Engine
Ground clearance is the distance from the lowest point in the center of the car body to the ground. However, the manufacturer of Toyota Avensis measures ground clearance as it suits it. This means that the distance from the shock absorbers, engine oil pan or muffler to the asphalt may be less than the stated ground clearance.
An interesting point: car buyers pay special attention to ground clearance, because in our country good ground clearance is a necessity; it will save you from headaches when parking to curbs. The ride height of Toyota Avensis ranges from 140 to 160 mm
But be careful when going on vacation or returning with shopping: a loaded car will easily lose 2-3 centimeters of ground clearance
The ride height of the Toyota Avensis ranges from 140 to 160 mm. But be careful when going on vacation or returning with shopping: a loaded car will easily lose 2-3 centimeters of ground clearance.
If desired, the ground clearance of any car can be increased using spacers for shock absorbers. The car will become taller. However, it will lose its former stability at high speeds and will lose greatly in maneuverability. The ground clearance can also be reduced; for this, as a rule, it is enough to replace the standard shock absorbers with tuning ones: the handling and stability will immediately please you.

More details
The range of motors is extensive; these are old popular Japanese engines of excellent reliability. In the restyling, the engine was equipped with VVT-i variable valve timing systems, which increased power.
List of internal combustion engines:
- 4AFE – 1.6-liter 16-valve engine with a capacity of 110 horsepower and 145 units of torque;
- 7AFE – 1.8-liter engine also with 110 horses and already 155 H*m of torque;
- 3SFE – 2-liter engine producing 128 horsepower and 178 units of torque;
- 3ZZFE - the same 1.6-liter engine with the same power ratings;
- 1ZZFE – 1.8-liter engine with VVT-i, producing 129 hp. with 170 units of torque;
- 1AZFSE - a 2-liter engine, for which the VVT-i system increased power to 150 horses and 200 H*m of torque;
- 1CD FTV - diesel turbocharged 2-liter internal combustion engine of Avensis, with a capacity of 90 horses and 203 H*m of torque;
- 2CT is a 2-liter turbo diesel engine that already produces 110 horsepower with 250 units of torque.
Such a huge list was offered with an even narrow list of gearboxes - a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. The suspension used is simple, which promises relative comfort and excellent reliability - around MacPherson struts. Disc brake system with front ventilation and ABS + EBD assistants. ZF rack and pinion steering is complemented by hydraulic booster.

More details
Most likely, future buyers of the Japanese know all the characteristics of the engines; for the rest, it will be enough to study the data in the table. It seems to us more important to discuss the reliability of each engine.
There are many rumors about the quality of engines, but one true one is that they are no longer as durable as before. The 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE is more common on the market, which before restyling had an incorrect piston group design, a quickly stretching chain and other little things. There is a lightweight cylinder head, sensitive to high temperatures. Scuffing of the cast iron liners of the Toyota Avensis T250 engine rarely occurs, unless you operate the car for a long time with the rings stuck.
Gradually the engine begins to consume oil. Some owners, due to careful driving, have driven more than 300 thousand on the engine without capital (these are restyled engines). In general, this is a relatively reliable motor, the maintenance of which can be mediocre, and in the end you can buy a cheap contract engine.
Rarely found is a smaller 1.6-liter version of this engine, the 3ZZ-FE. Due to the lightweight design, all elements last a little longer and consume less oil.
The second most popular is the 2-liter 1AZ-FSE engine; it has proven itself well in the previous generation. Fans are willing to pay a premium for more power to get a durable engine. Among the problems, there is an increased production of cylinders in winter, and before restyling, the Avensis cylinder head bolts were pulled out. The main thing is to notice the problem in time, otherwise the antifreeze will leak, overheating will appear and you will have to change the head. It’s better to take a closer look at the restyled units.
The 2AZ-FE and 2AZ-FSE engines are the same, differing only in the installation of balancer shafts, which is why they last even longer. Finding such a car is almost impossible. Diesel engines are also rare, there are problems with them - the need for high-quality fuel, the need to clean the turbine and EGR after 150 thousand. There are other faults, so we recommend bypassing diesel internal combustion engines.
Toyota Avensis
Toyota Avensis was released for the first time in 1997; it became a worthy replacement for the popular Carina E in those years. The car was classified as class D.
Many generations of this car, and there were three of them, were at the peak of popularity among Russian consumers. There were many reasons for this.
Story
As mentioned above, the first Toyota Avensis model was introduced to the general consumer in 1997
This car instantly attracted the attention of consumers; it was distinguished by the high level of quality characteristic of all Japanese cars, as well as an invariably decent level of comfort
The mass purchase of cars began around 2002, when its design changed, by the way, developed by French specialists. The appearance acquired the missing power, which was facilitated by large wheel arches, a massive bumper, and original lighting elements.
The level of comfort of the car is worthy of special attention; it has become a worthy rival for other cars classified as the executive class. The back seat easily accommodated three passengers of average build.
In 2008, the car underwent another update, after which it received a new look, embodying the many years of experience of Toyota designers. The car has retained its beauty, added comfort, and maintained quality at the proper level.
Total information
2008 marked the start of the production of the third generation of Avensis sedans and station wagons. They made their debut at the Paris Motor Show. Engineers and designers have worked hard to update the design and technical capabilities. Thanks to their well-coordinated work, comfort indicators have significantly increased. The aerodynamics of the car, together with a powerful engine, made it the king of the roads, while safety is at the highest level. According to the results of crash tests, Toyota Avensis scores maximum points.
The domestic market offers a choice of five trim levels. The model, equipped to the maximum, is equipped with a touch display, wireless communication, a modern audio system, cameras that provide all-round visibility, and a parking assistance system. A variety of electronic systems and 9 airbags guarantee one hundred percent reliability.
The third generation family attracts with its original design, good equipment and wide functionality.
Exterior and body
The design of the Avensis was quite simple, which was typical for any budget car of this period. Until the moment of restyling, the car was created from ordinary metal, which led to the rapid spread of corrosion processes. After the changes were made, the roof was galvanized, which prevented the occurrence of the above problem.
Sedan dimensions:
- length – 4490 mm;
- width – 1710 mm;
- height – 1425 mm;
- wheelbase – 230 cm;
- ground clearance – 14 cm.
Station wagon dimensions:
- length – 4570 mm;
- width – 1710 mm;
- height – 1500 mm;
- wheelbase – 263 cm;
- ground clearance – 14 cm.
The manufacturer's recommended wheel size for all models was the same - 185/65/R14.
Toyota Avensis T250 - second generation
The design of the second generation, called T250, was quite attractive:
- changing the shape of the radiator grille;
- replacement of optical elements that have changed their appearance to a parallelogram shape;
- the taillights became teardrop-shaped.
The 2006 restyling did not in any way affect the appearance of the car.

- 2.0 AD-FHV: diesel unit, direct injection, four cylinders, sixteen valves, maximum torque 200 Nm.
Restyling
This car was restyled in 2006. What changed:
- minor changes in the appearance of the car;
- the shape of the radiator grille, rear and front bumpers has changed;
- transparent inserts appeared on the rear headlights;
- Installed turn signals on the side mirrors.
Interior
Not only is the exterior attractive, the interior world of the Avensis is no worse. The steering wheel, located on the left, is trimmed with high-quality leather that is pleasant to the touch. The steering wheel is adjustable in height and depth. The gear shift lever is lined with similar material. The seats are upholstered in fabric or a combination of Alcantara and leather.
For maximum convenience, an electromechanical handbrake, heated seats, and the ability to change the position of the backrests in six directions are provided. A nice bonus for smoking drivers will be an ashtray and a lighter located on the center console.
Interior lighting is a separate issue. Each passenger seat and driver's seat are equipped with individual lamps. The luggage compartment is also illuminated separately. The instrument panel is also equipped with backlighting for nighttime use.
The multimedia system is a familiar audio system that works with 6 speakers. More modern models are equipped with Toyota Touch 2. This already means a 7-inch bright display and 6 speakers.
Thanks to the Bluetooth wireless system, you can connect peripheral devices. There is a 12V socket built in near the armrest. An iPod/iPhone can be connected via a USB port hidden between the passenger and driver seats.
Exterior
The radiator grille, tailgate trim, window moldings and roof rails are all chrome elements. The wheel size depends on the configuration: 16 or 17 inches.
Halogen headlights provide good visibility on the road, and daytime running lights are equipped with the ability to change the angle of the vehicle and automatically turn off at a time.
The manufacturer has provided the possibility of installing a lighting sensor. The front and rear of the car are equipped with fog lights. Dimensions and brake lights are made of LED optics.
The windshield is protected from deformation when exposed to high temperatures. It is coated with a special layer that protects against UV radiation. The wipers work in conjunction with the rain sensor. The rear window is equipped with a washer, the side windows are equipped with electric windows. All of them operate on an electric drive.
The mirrors located on the side have an electric drive, position adjustment functions, and heating. The latter can be set in advance in time.
Trunk
The Toyota Venza has a spacious trunk. Its volume is enough for daily use in urban environments, long country trips and transportation of bulky items.
If the owner needs to transport cargo of large weight and volume (furniture or household appliances in packaging), the size of the luggage compartment can be increased. To do this, simply fold down the backrests of the rear row seats.
The volume of the Toyota Venza trunk depends on the vehicle configuration and the country for which it was produced:
- Toyota Venza suv, GV10 (restyling completed in 2012) is presented on the Russian market. The model came in 3 trim levels. The trunk size with the backrests up is 975 liters. With the seats folded down, there is 1,795 liters of free space.
- Toyota Venza suv, GV10 for the American market has 10 trim levels. Trunk capacity for all models is 1025 liters.
- The smallest trunk size is the Toyota Venza, produced since 2008. Its volume is 869 liters with the rear row backrests raised.
For large loads, you can install an additional roof rack on the car. It will allow you to transport bicycles, small boats, construction materials, etc.
Engine 1AZ-FSE technical specifications
Let's take a closer look at the engine from the Japanese 1AZ-FSE line.
1AZ-FSE (1AZ-FSE)
The engine of this brand is not welcome due to its strong negative impact on the environment. The engine runs on a fuel-air mixture, producing a large amount of emissions into the environment.
Designation
Toyota regulations provide the following explanation:
- 1 – serial number;
- A – engine series;
- Z – gasoline unit;
- F – standard power;
- S – direct fuel injection;
- E – electronic fuel atomizer.
ICE models 1AZ
The first model in the series was 1AZ-FE. The second was 1AZ-FSE. They differ from each other in the type of fuel injection: the first has distributed, the second has direct.
Principle of operation
At the base of the pistons there are special reflective recesses that create vortices, the maximum concentration of which is located under the spark plug. The creation and launch of motor operating cycles takes place using the latest technologies.
The fuel-air mixture is created layer by layer. The nozzles operate in three modes. The VVTi system regulates the distribution of gas, and the exhaust is subjected to afterburning.
An electronic control unit controls the creation of the mixture. It can change the injection time, its quantity, configuration, compression, as well as the position of the valves inside the intake channel.
Differences between 1az-fse and 3s
The main differences relate to design and materials. The AZ cooling jacket is open type, which means that the cylinders are cooled evenly on all sides by antifreeze. All AZ channels are through, and the S series has several blind channels.
The center of the power unit has also undergone changes. On the AZ line, the crankshaft is now offset by approximately 1 cm.
Why is the engine considered disposable?
There are internal combustion engine models with very thin cylinder walls, so repairs by installing liners and boring will not work here.
Timing or Chain
The S line of engines came with chains as a gas distribution mechanism. New models are now equipped with timing belts.
FSE faults
Despite the modifications and improvements of internal combustion engine models, they were not spared from malfunctions. Here are the most common:
- Frequent fuel injection pump malfunctions. This is especially true for gasoline engines, because this is affected by different properties of the fuel. Gasoline strongly dries out elements and at the same time acts as a degreasing agent. When additives are added, wear occurs even faster;
- Secondary gases can be re-combusted. But this affects the excessive accumulation of soot on the walls of parts. This can be understood by the way the car jerks, dips, and vibrations can also be felt;
- It is almost impossible to adjust the valves yourself, so you will have to use a special machine.

Exterior
The appearance of the Toyota Avensis pleases the eye with a chrome-plated radiator grille, a trim on the tailgate and window line molding, and roof rails on the five-door station wagon. Wheels, depending on the configuration, are installed 16- and 17-inch.
Appearance
Illumination of the road is provided by halogen headlights (lens) of increased brightness with daytime running lights with the ability to change the angle of inclination mechanically and an auto-timer to turn off. It is also possible to install a light sensor. All variants are equipped with front fog lights and a rear fog light. Dimensions and brake lights are made using LEDs.
The windshield is protected from changing shape under the influence of temperature factors and completely filters ultraviolet radiation. Windshield wipers in the Comfort and Elegance trim levels are installed together with a rain sensor. The five-door station wagon also comes with a rear window wiper and washer system. The front and rear windows are equipped with an automatic electric drive.
Side mirrors in all configurations are supplied with electric adjustment and heating, triggered by an auto-timer. In trim levels other than the basic one, the central rearview mirror has an automatic dimming function, which prevents glare when the sun is positioned behind the driver.
Body
Toyota's design has always been simple, as they made relatively budget cars for the people. More than 20 years later, the body's survivability, not its appearance, should be discussed. There are many problems after so many years. Rust gradually affects all sides of the body, the bottoms of the doors and front fenders are the first to suffer, and the sills rot badly.
The pre-styling of the first Avensis had ordinary metal, so the windshield frame rusted, which promises difficulties during replacement. In the restyling, the roof was galvanized, freeing it from rot. Decorative moldings around the car often fall off or break.
Dimensions and types of bodies speak about other dimensions and their own problems. A station wagon, for example, loses its cover when the roof rails are removed.
Car sizes
Sedan:
- length – 4490 mm;
- width – 1710 mm;
- height – 1425 mm;
- wheelbase – 2630 mm;
- ground clearance - 140 mm.
The hatchback essentially differs in the shape of the trunk lid, the dimensions are the same, so it is more logical to classify it as a liftback.
Station wagon:
- length – 4570 mm;
- width – 1710 mm;
- height – 1500 mm;
- wheelbase – 2630 mm;
- ground clearance - 140 mm.
The wheel size is always identical - 185/65/R14.
Minuses
Despite the positive characteristics of the second generation Avensis, it was not without its drawbacks. Among them are:
- Fogging of the headlights is observed, which negatively affects their illuminating ability. Moreover, after three years of using the car, the reflector mirror often falls off;
- Seat padding and upholstery lose their original appearance after a mileage of 100,000 km;
- Small resource of the worm pair of electric power steering, approximately 50,000 km;
- Increased oil consumption on engines from 2003 to 2005. For Toyota Avensis models since 2006, this problem has been eliminated;
- The fastidiousness of diesel engines to the quality of the fuel used;
- A common problem with manual transmissions is failure of the primary and secondary shaft bearings. As a rule, after 60,000 - 100,000 km they begin to hum. Delaying repairs can lead to detrimental consequences;
- Problems with struts and front stabilizer bushings arise when the car runs from 20,000 to 40,000 km.
