The problem with opening the luggage compartment seems serious to an inexperienced car owner, requiring the intervention of specialists. In fact, not every case requires qualified repairs, and you can deal with the problem yourself. If the trunk of an Avensis does not open, the cylinder is broken, or the cargo compartment lock is simply frozen. This material contains instructions for opening the trunk in any case, but first we will determine the capacity of various generations and body types.
Toyota Avensis - technical specifications
Toyota Avensis is a Japanese car that perfectly combines modern technology and maximum comfort.
Over the period from 1997 to 2021, the world saw 3 generations of Avensis. The 1st generation Toyota Avensis was produced in three bodies: liftback, sedan, and station wagon. 2nd generation cars, produced under the T25 symbol, rolled off the assembly line from 2003 to 2008. These were models with a completely new design and improved interior. Specialists from a French studio worked on the exterior.
The third generation of Avensis was practically no different in appearance, but it was created on a completely different basis. Now only two bodies were sent to the market: a sedan and a station wagon.
The popular Toyota Camry returned to Europe in 2021, which resulted in the cessation of production of Avensis. In the summer of that year, the company released the last station wagon, the body of which was painted ocher. Now in England the Japanese company produces exclusively Toyota Auris.
These were a few words about the long history of Toyota Avensis. Now let’s take a closer look at this interesting car, looking at the points related to the technical characteristics.

Station wagon (station wagon, station wagon, combi, station wagon) Segment:
Medium
The second generation Avensis was introduced to the European market in 2003 in three body styles: sedan, hatchback and station wagon. The latter had the largest trunk in its family.
The first generation Avensis was on the market for only five years before being replaced. Sales were good, but the Japanese automaker knew that Europeans needed a bigger car. Its main competitors, such as the Volkswagen Passat, Ford Mondeo or Renault Laguna, were larger and more comfortable. Even their main rival, Honda, was in the market with a larger station wagon. So in 2003 the second generation arrived in February.
It was 115 mm (4.5 in) longer than its predecessor and promised better value for money. The new platform and new engine line showed that the company was back with its lessons well learned. From a design perspective, the Avensis wasn't much of an achievement. His core qualities were hidden beneath the surface. The reliability factor and comfortable seats were the main pluses. Not surprisingly, the buyers were mostly men.
Inside, the flat but comfortable seats were fitted with velor upholstery as standard, which was hard-wearing and easy to clean. With the rear seats up, its boot measured 521 liters (18.4 cu ft), which was larger than some of its competitors. Depending on the trim level, the Avensis Tourer was offered with leather and heated seats.
The powertrain came with a choice of engines, both petrol and diesel. Depending on engine choice, the standard transmission was a 5- or 6-speed manual, while a 4- or 5-speed automatic was on the options list.

Dimensions, dimensions and weight of Toyota Avensis of all years of manufacture
The overall dimensions of Toyota Avensis, whether it is 2008 or 2010, 1997 or 2021, have a difference. Let's look at different modifications of the car, in different years of production, in order to track how this car has changed over the years and its parameters.
Toyota Avensis dimensions and weight
As with any other car, for the Toyota Avensis dimensions are the most important parameters of the car.
The dimensions of the body are important for understanding how difficult it will be to drive the vehicle. After all, in dense city traffic conditions, it is much easier to cope with driving a small car. However, this criterion can be called controversial; with proper driving experience, driving a car with any parameters may not cause any difficulties for a person.
For Toyota Avensis, as well as for any other car, overall dimensions are usually determined based on three parameters:
- body length;
- body width;
- body height.
The first parameter, length, is determined by measuring the most prominent front point of the bumper to the distant plane of the rear bumper. Width is measured at the widest point of the car, this can be the wheel arches or the B-pillars. Height is more difficult to measure than the first two parameters; it is usually determined by noting the distance from the ground to the roof of the car. It should be noted that the height of the rails is not included in the parameter.
Dimensions
The dimensions of the Toyota Avensis need to be considered, including different years of production of the car, be it 2007, 2010 or 2021. Let's take a closer look at the length, width and height of the body in relation to different modifications of this car.

More details
The model has its own line of as many as 5 power units, there is plenty to choose from. Three petrol and two diesel engines are offered. The power of all of them is not that great, but for city driving it is quite enough. Also, these motors should not have problems with reliability, since the design is not particularly complex.
Toyota Avensis petrol units:
- The weakest gasoline engine is a 16-valve naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine that produces 132 horsepower and 160 H*m of torque. It accelerates the car to hundreds in 10 seconds, and the maximum speed is 200 km/h. Its consumption is not that high - 8 liters in the city and 5 liters on the highway, you need at least AI-95.
- The next unit is essentially the same, but its volume has been increased to 1.8 liters, as a result of which the power has increased to 147 horses and the torque to 180 H*m. The dynamics have become better, acceleration has decreased by 1 second, and for some reason the maximum speed has not changed. Fuel consumption also remained unchanged.
- The latest gasoline engine is a 16-valve naturally aspirated 2-liter unit. It has 152 horsepower and 189 torque. There is more power, but due to a different gearbox the dynamics are worse - 10 seconds to hundreds and 205 km/h maximum speed, maximum speed as you understand better. Consumption remained the same.
Diesel engines:
- The base diesel has a volume of 1.6 liters, it is 16-valve and at the same time turbocharged. It has 112 horsepower and 270 H*m of torque. 11 seconds to a hundred, this is of course rather weak, the maximum speed is 180 km/h. This unit pleases with its low consumption of only 5 liters of diesel fuel in the city and 3.5 on the highway.
- The latest diesel also has a turbine; in general, diesel engines are rarely not turbocharged. Its volume is equal to 2 liters and it produces 143 horses, which are achieved at 4 thousand revolutions. The torque is as much as 320 H*m. 9.5 seconds to hundreds and 200 km/h top speed is not bad. The consumption will be approximately half a liter more than the previous unit.
The suspension of the Toyota Avensis 2018-2019 (T27) remains the same; the model has an independent front design, which is mounted on MacPherson struts. At the rear there is a beam mounted on double wishbones. There are anti-roll bars, the shock absorbers have been replaced with softer ones. An electric booster helps drive the car.
A 6-speed manual transmission is offered as a pair for the units, and some units are paired with a CVT CVT gearbox. All versions of the units have only front-wheel drive. The car will stop using disc brakes, the front ones are ventilated. The front brake disc diameter is 320 mm, and the rear is 290 mm.
The Japanese manufacturer has once again managed to make an excellent city car. It is not worth taking if you are a young guy, as you most likely like speed. The car is suitable for older people or girls. It’s difficult to call it a family car, because the space in the cabin is not that huge. In general, we can say with confidence that this is a good car.
If the trunk lock is frozen
Avensis car owners, especially in cities with harsh winter climates, are very familiar with the situation when the trunk is frozen and does not want to open. If your Avensis trunk does not open during frosts, there are several ways to deal with the problem.
First of all, you should immediately abandon the idea of opening it by force with a key, since the key will break on the first try. It is necessary to heat the key using ordinary matches or a lighter and insert the hot key, its heat will gradually warm the insides of the lock cylinder. Under no circumstances should you turn the key - just insert it into the keyhole, remove it, heat it and insert it again - until the cylinder gives in.
There is also a special tool for defrosting locks; it is sold in a specialized auto store and can effectively cope with the problem in question.
You can also use a hairdryer if there is an outlet close to the machine. If there is no outlet, a bottle of hot water will be a longer but no less effective remedy; however, the inconvenience of this method lies in the inevitability of frequent water changes in conditions of subzero temperatures.
In the end, you can use the help of a neighbor who owns a car by connecting the hole in the exhaust pipe of his car with a suitable hose to the jammed lock of your car and heating the cylinder using exhaust gases.
Interior
Not only is the exterior attractive, the interior world of the Avensis is no worse. The steering wheel, located on the left, is trimmed with high-quality leather that is pleasant to the touch. The steering wheel is adjustable in height and depth. The gear shift lever is lined with similar material. The seats are upholstered in fabric or a combination of Alcantara and leather.
For maximum convenience, an electromechanical handbrake, heated seats, and the ability to change the position of the backrests in six directions are provided. A nice bonus for smoking drivers will be an ashtray and a lighter located on the center console.
Interior lighting is a separate issue. Each passenger seat and driver's seat are equipped with individual lamps. The luggage compartment is also illuminated separately. The instrument panel is also equipped with backlighting for nighttime use.
The multimedia system is a familiar audio system that works with 6 speakers. More modern models are equipped with Toyota Touch 2. This already means a 7-inch bright display and 6 speakers.
Thanks to the Bluetooth wireless system, you can connect peripheral devices. There is a 12V socket built in near the armrest. An iPod/iPhone can be connected via a USB port hidden between the passenger and driver seats.

Toyota Avensis For Russia Logbook Increase in front clearance by 3cm
All the same, although the Avensis is a tall car (as it previously seemed to me), we often “scratch” the front (especially me), my wife, of course, scrapes less with the bottom, because He drives much more carefully than me. Plus, precious centimeters of landing (about 3-4 cm) are taken away by engine and automatic transmission protection. I also trimmed the Skirt (front lip) a little by about 2-3 cm, it seemed to work without compromising the design. Therefore, I set out to slightly increase the vehicle's ground clearance. I started, of course, by searching for various options on the Internet, and then I went shopping to see what options were available. The first attempt of the “Zadir” turned out to be unsuccessful, I bought interturn spacers, but they did not increase the ground clearance, but only made the car stiffer and I had to abandon this option. Next, I bought 20mm spacers for the struts; they originally fit 2108-2110, but they fit the holes perfectly; they also come with extended bolts. I cut one spacer myself 10mm from “rubber” (conveyor belt). Repair sequence: remove the wheel, unscrew the strut at the top and bottom, unscrew the “link” from the strut, holding it with a clamp (third hand clamps) in the photo, knock out the bolts on the removed strut, weld new ones (elongated ones), because If the splines don't fit, you install spacers and put everything back together.

Salon
Toyota Avensis 2002 or Toyota Avensis 2010 had their own internal interior framing features. However, some common features can still be identified:
- low cost of cladding materials;
- minimal functionality;
- fabric seat upholstery;
- minimum free space inside;
- the presence of a folding armrest in the rear seat;
- the possibility of increasing the luggage compartment by folding the rear seat: in the sedan its size was 500 liters, in the hatchback - 510 liters, in the station wagon - 530 liters;
- four-spoke steering wheel;
- an analog instrument panel containing a fuel gauge, tachometer, speedometer, and a gauge showing engine temperature;
- wooden inserts on the center console;
- cassette car radio;
- on the central tunnel there is a gearshift lever, a cup holder, and a handbrake.
Toyota Avensis T270 - third generation
The third and last generation of Toyota Avensis was produced in sedan and station wagon body styles and had a body index T270. Traditionally, in Europe, the most popular was a two-volume car with an enlarged luggage compartment and a diesel engine, of which three options were available: one two-liter 1AD-FTV and two engines with a volume of 2.2 liters (2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV), having a common block, but developing different power – 150 and 177 hp. For the first time, automatic transmissions were installed in tandem with diesel engines, and gasoline engines could be equipped with a choice of mechanics or a continuously variable transmission, popular in Japan.
Station wagon Avensis T270 after restyling
Diesel engines were not presented for the Russian market. The engine line consisted of three naturally aspirated gasoline engines, the base of which was a 1.6-liter engine (1ZR-FAE), available only with a manual transmission. The other two were the 2ZR-FAE and 3ZR-FAE power units, which, despite the difference in volume (1.8 and 2 liters, respectively), had almost the same power of about 150 hp. Together with these engines, a CVT or manual transmission worked.
Avensis T270 dorestayl
In addition to technical changes, the third generation in the T270 body captivated car enthusiasts with its appearance and interior equipment. Avensis was designed to match the Toyota corporate style. This is especially pronounced in the radiator grille, headlights and bumper. Already in the basic Comfort version, the car had a multifunction steering wheel, heated seats, seven airbags, and an MP3 audio system. The top-end Luxury version covered the needs of even the most pampered driver: from keyless entry and a leather steering wheel to Bluetooth, 11 speakers and 10 GB of hard disk space for a music server. In addition to airbags, all kinds of electronic systems were responsible for safety, including ABS, EBD, ESP and TCS.
Restyling
The third generation Toyota Avensis has undergone two restylings, but only the first of them affected the domestic consumer. After restyling in 2011, Avensis cars were supplied to Russia only with the 1.8 2ZR-FAE engine.
The first restyling did not bring fundamental changes to the exterior and interior. Small changes to the grille, headlights and bumpers slightly rejuvenated the car. Inside, the car received a new multimedia system with voice control function.
Salon T250 and T270
In Europe, the T270 model experienced another restyling in 2015. In an attempt to increase sales, the manufacturer made changes to the appearance. There are noticeable changes in the optics - the headlights have become more elongated, and the radiator grille gives the car an aggressive look. In this restyling, no changes were made in the technical part.
Toyota Avensis trunk volume
Toyota Avensis is a middle class car produced in the UK since 1997. The predecessor of this model is the 1992 Toyota Carina E. The first generation Avensis received three body types - sedan, liftback and station wagon, as well as an engine range of three petrol engines - 1.6 (110 hp), 1.8 liter (110 hp) and 2.0 l (128 hp). Economical versions - diesel with turbocharging of 2.0 liters (110 hp). The car was produced for the European market in England and the Netherlands.
In 1998, the Toyota Avensis received three stars out of five in the Euro NCAP crash test for adult occupant protection.

Toyota Avensis station wagon: detailed overview of characteristics
Toyota Avensis station wagon
In the mid-90s, Toyota Carina had to leave the model range, so the Japanese manufacturer thought about developing a new car in a similar style. 1997 was marked by the release of the Toyota Avensis assembly line. The car was produced in three body styles: station wagon, sedan and hatchback. The second one was more popular among drivers, so its number on the secondary market is large even now.
But today we will pay special attention to a specific body – a station wagon. The Japanese developed it specifically for implementation among European citizens. Toyota Avensis Wagon – this is the name given to this modification.
Toyota Avensis Wagon has good road stability because the five-speed automatic transmission does not increase the speed of the power unit. The car engine runs almost silently, allowing for smooth acceleration. Most trim levels are equipped with gasoline engines, but sometimes you can find diesel engines.
Now let’s take a closer look at the three generations of the station wagon.
First generation - T220
The first version of Toyota Avensis was presented to the world in 1997. At that time, it was a car of simple design, which is what was required for a budget option. The model belonged to the T220 type.
Before restyling, ordinary metal was used to create the car, so it quickly corroded. The updated version had a galvanized roof.
Inside, the interior was lined with not the most expensive materials. The chairs were covered mainly with fabric. The functionality of the car was at a minimum level. I would like more free space.
The rear seat had a folding armrest. The last row of seats folded, due to which it was possible to increase the volume of the luggage compartment, which without this was 530 liters.
At the front of the car there was a dashboard. It contains a fuel sensor, speedometer, tachometer, and engine temperature sensor. A cassette car radio was located nearby.
The central tunnel became the receptacle for the gear shift lever, cup holder and handbrake.
Wooden inserts fit nicely into the center console.
Despite its overall simplicity, the 1st generation Avensis was a reliable car. Each trim level was equipped with an anti-lock wheel system (ABS), as well as airbags.
Reviews from owners about the first generation are varied, the majority of them are positive. But there are also negative points:
- Excessive consumption of engine oil;
- Moisture and water easily enter the trunk through the joints;
- Frequent problems with the functioning of the central locking and power windows.
Characteristics
The first generation versions ran on diesel and gasoline internal combustion engines. After restyling, Avensis with a two-liter engine became available. The cars operated on a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission.
- Four-cylinder 4A-FE - 1.6 liters, produced 110 hp;
- Four-cylinder 7A-FE - 1.8 liters, produced 110 hp;
- 3S-FE – 2 l, power 128 hp;
- Diesel two-liter 2C-TE – power 90 hp;
- Diesel two-liter 1 CD-FTV – 110 hp.
Second generation - T250
The second generation of the station wagon received the T250 index. The automobile market began to replenish with Avensis 2, starting from 2003 until 2008.
2006 was marked by the first restyling of this modification.
Toyota Avensis 2 is an unpretentious, reliable car that can deliver from one point to another without problems. The station wagon body is comfortable, practical and looks good.
Avensis knows how to combine good technological equipment and a lot of advantages. In the spring of 2003, special crash tests were carried out, according to the results of which it was recognized as the safest car of the year. The total number of airbags inside the cabin is 9, there is even one designed to protect the driver’s knees.
It is worth recognizing that the Avensis station wagon is less popular in Russia than the sedan. But nevertheless, this does not reduce its comfort and attractiveness.
Characteristics
Toyota T250 was equipped with two power units running on gasoline fuel. But, about them in more detail below. Two types of gearboxes were used for engines - automatic and manual. The model was equipped with an independent suspension consisting of MacPherson struts at the front and a linkage system at the rear. The front part was complemented by ventilated disc brakes, and the rear discs were not ventilated.
Salon Toyota Avensis 2018-2019
The interior of the car has also changed; it has become much better and more modern. Front passengers will enjoy premium leather-trimmed seats. These seats are electrically adjustable in 8 directions and heated. The back row is also covered in leather; it is a sofa with attachments for a child seat and a folding armrest with two cup holders. There is not much free space, but there is enough of it both in the front and in the rear.
The steering column has leather trim and is thick and quite comfortable. The steering wheel is 4-spoke, it has chrome inserts and has as many as 18 buttons for controlling the audio system and cruise control. There is adjustment both in height and reach.
The model received aggressive analog gauges on the dashboard, which are placed in large wells with chrome trim. In the middle there is an on-board computer that provides a lot of useful information. Two sensors are placed in the wells, a tachometer and oil temperature together, and a speedometer and fuel level sensor together.
The Toyota Avensis dashboard panel in the middle has an unusual beveled shape; in the middle there are narrow air deflectors with a chrome line, between which there is an alarm button. The center console received an 8-inch touch screen multimedia system in its upper part, which is recessed inside. The buttons around them are also slightly recessed inward, and there are also two washers. Below is a separate climate control unit - this is a small monitor, two washers with a chrome trim and a number of buttons.
The tunnel is stylishly made, look at the photo and you will agree with this. Its upper part has control washers for seat heating. Afterwards we see a small selector for a CVT or manual transmission. After that there is a button to turn on the sports mode, and behind it there is one cup holder with a lid.
The model has a good trunk, but it is disappointing due to the lack of various boxes. The volume itself is good, it is equal to 509 liters, the seats cannot be folded, but there is a hatch for skis. By the way, the doors inside are beautifully decorated; they have wooden inserts, leather armrests and a small pocket.
If the problem is in the lock
If the Avensis trunk does not open, the lock is not frozen, but jammed and is not going to give in, you can get into the cargo compartment through the interior in order to dismantle the unit and subsequently repair the Avensis rear door lock.
Mounting points for trunk trim Avensis T250
Having lowered the back row of seats and getting into the cargo compartment, you need to press the inside handle, thereby getting the opportunity to repair or replace the cylinder. If your model does not have an internal handle, you will have to disassemble the door trim and remove the internal plastic panel, for which you need to get rid of six screws.
After this, you need to unscrew the bolts and carefully remove the locking mechanism in order to repair or replace it.
Mounting points for the trunk trim of the Avensis 250 sedan
If you need to close the back door after the cylinder has already been disassembled, you should use a regular screwdriver to turn the back door hinge.
There are cases when the rear door lock does not operate due to insufficient travel of the electric drive - in this case, it is necessary to move the bar at the place where the rod is attached from the cylinder and the lock in the direction opposite to its current location. This situation can arise simply due to frequent unlocking of the back door with a key. The electric lock should be disassembled with extreme care and caution, since there is a possibility of damage to the internals and the impossibility of reassembling in the reverse order, which will lead to the need to completely replace the cargo compartment lock.
