New Toyota Alphard – dream interior and design of the future

In 2002, Toyota launched its line of business class minivans, designed to compete with Mercedes and Peugeot. At first, the model was produced only for Japanese consumers, in 2005 it reached the European market and only in 2011 - to the Russian market. In 2021, the third generation of Alphard appeared with new interior and exterior and a starting price of more than 4 million rubles. What do Japanese manufacturers offer for such a considerable amount?

If there are still some questions regarding the exterior of the car, then there can be no complaints about the interior:

1. The front panel looks laconic and tasteful. Even the unfortunate plastic overlays “like wood” could not spoil the picture. Genuine leather upholstery, responsive 9-inch touch screen, beautiful silver frame of the central tunnel, convenient location of multimedia system and climate control buttons. The picture is completed by a complex of control functions to the left of the automatic transmission, an ashtray with a cigarette lighter, the ability to wired and wirelessly charge gadgets, as well as a huge armrest.
2. The first row seats are covered with high-quality leather, equipped with lateral support, electronic adjustment, heating and cooling systems. The driver's seat is reminiscent of a Land Cruiser with a convenient location of all functionality, and the ability to adapt the steering wheel to any body type.

1. The second-row chairs in the Toyota Alphard interior are hard to call seats. In fact, the manufacturers themselves called them “captain’s chairs,” which are more often found in business class cabins of elite airlines. Passengers will be able to take advantage of a footrest, a pull-out table, zoned heating and cooling, adaptive position adjustment and even a massage function. And if on the outside the car remained largely similar to its predecessor, then in terms of the “filling” there were much more changes.

From the stern, it is easy to distinguish the new Toyota Alphard 2021 model by the new lights, which have noticeably increased in size and moved closer to the glazing. And the Vellfire version sports a modified rear bumper and a completely different front end design with a more complex grille, bumper and “two-story” lighting equipment.

The architecture of the front panel in the van's interior remained the same, but the car received a new instrument panel and steering wheel, a rethought center console with air ducts of a different shape and a large color screen for the multimedia system. As before, the cabin configuration can have several options - the maximum passenger capacity is eight people.

The seats of the first and second rows can now move on a common slide, plus an Executive Lounge version has appeared with wider second-row seats (+ 100 mm), equipped with individual tables and armrests, retractable footrests, heating and ventilation.

Specifications

Toyota Alphard 2021 in a new body has grown in size compared to the previous generation car. Depending on the version, the length of the car now ranges from 4,915 to 4,935 mm (the increase was 75 and 95 mm, respectively), the wheelbase has increased by 50 millimeters - to 3,000, the width has increased by 20 - to 1,850, and the height has been reduced to 1,880.

The company worked to increase the rigidity of the minivan body, improved noise and vibration insulation, and instead of the previous torsion beam at the rear, a new independent suspension on double wishbones now appeared, which made the car more comfortable.

The base engine for the 2021 Toyota Alphard (specifications) is a 2.5-liter unit producing 182 hp. , which replaced the 170-horsepower engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters. It is paired with a modernized 3.5-liter V6, which retains the same output of 275 forces, but received more thrust - 340 Nm versus 330 previously.

The first is paired with a CVT, and the more powerful one is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. Moreover, both versions of the model can be either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. And the new Alphard and Vellfire are available with a hybrid powertrain with a total output of 197 hp. (average consumption in the combined cycle is stated at 5.1 l/100 km).

It consists of a 152-horsepower (206 Nm) 2.5-liter gasoline “four” operating on the Atkinson cycle and an electric motor on the front axle with a power of 143 hp. (270 Nm), 6-speed automatic transmission, as well as an electric motor (68 hp and 139 Nm) providing all-wheel drive (E-Four) on the rear axle and a nickel-metal hydride battery for energy storage.

What is the price

Today we are supplied with a restyled version of the minivan with a 3.5-liter engine producing 300 horsepower. The price of Toyota Alphard 2021 starts from 4,612,000 rubles for the Prestige package, but it already includes a leather interior, ventilated front seats, heated first two rows of seats, separate captain's chairs in the rear, three-zone climate control, multimedia, rear view camera in the interior mirror , blind spot monitoring and 17-inch wheels.

The Luxe version (RUB 4,880,000) is complemented by monitors for rear passengers and a premium JBL media system with navigation, while the top-end Executive Lounge version (RUB 4,966,000) features expensive leather trim, rear seat ventilation, folding tables and 18″ wheels.

Updated Alphard and Vellfire 2018

At the end of December two thousand and seventeen, Toyota presented updated versions of the 3rd generation Alphard and Vellfire minivans, which received noticeable appearance adjustments, richer equipment and modified technical content.

During the restyling, the design of both modifications of the model was seriously revised. Now the design of cars is dominated by complex lines, sharp edges and a large amount of chrome. At the front, Toyota Alphard 2021 received a more massive radiator grille, new “bifurcated” headlights, as well as different sections and placement of foglights.

At the stern, the taillights were revised. As for the interior, the tidy inside has changed, while the Japanese have added several additional options for interior trim in leather and wood, of which the most interesting is the black and white scheme.

The rigidity of the body of both cars was increased through the use of adhesive joints in the structure, which had a positive effect on control accuracy. As for the line of power units, the basic versions of minivans are still equipped with a 2.5-liter 2AR-FXE “four” with a power of 152 hp. (260 Nm), which works in conjunction with the Super CVT-i variator.

Also, Toyota Alphard and Wellfire can be ordered with a hybrid power plant, consisting of the already mentioned 2AR-FXE engine and two electric motors, one of which develops 143 hp. and is located on the front axle, and the second is 68-horsepower (on the rear).

For the flagship versions, a more powerful 3.5-liter V6 is now available, developing 301 “horses” (+ 21) and 361 Nm of torque (+ 17). This engine works in conjunction with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

And if the hybrid Toyota Alphard and Vellfire have all-wheel drive by default, then other modifications can be ordered in both front- and all-wheel drive versions, where an electronic clutch is used to connect the rear axle.

The list of basic equipment has been supplemented with the 2nd generation Toyota Safety Sense complex, which includes the ability to read road signs, a function to keep the car in its lane, recognition systems for pedestrians and cyclists in the daytime, as well as prompts when starting to drive in traffic jams or at traffic lights.

Note that during the restyling, the total number of Alphard trim levels increased to almost four dozen, while versions for disabled people received new compact mechanisms for sliding the seats outward, which are designed to make it easier to get in and out of the cabin.

Sales of the updated Toyota Alphard and Vellfire in Japan began on January 8, 2021 at a price of 3,354,480 yen (about 30 thousand dollars), and the minivan reached Russia a month later, and it has risen noticeably in price - now our price range for the model varies from 4,612,000 to 4,966,000 rubles.

When answering the question of how many seats there are in the Toyota Alphard, you need to take into account the year of manufacture and the sales market. From 2002 to 2015, versions with 4, 6, 7 and 8 seats were produced. But after the release of the third generation, only 7 and 8-seat options remained, and only models with 7 seats are supplied to Russia. In addition, only three children can fit in the last, third row; adults, even of average build, will be cramped there.

There is practically no luggage compartment with three rows of seats unfolded, which once again emphasizes the focus of the model on business clients, and not on families. The prices also speak volumes, soaring from 4.3 million rubles in the basic configuration to 4.75 million rubles in the Executive Lounge.
