We are looking for a good Toyota Corolla aftermarket: which version to choose?

The tenth generation of Toyota Corolla (2006-2013) is a real hit on the secondary market. However, this wonderful car also has nuances that you should pay attention to when purchasing. Officially, only Corolla sedans were supplied to our country, while the hatchback based on it was named Auris, and Corolla Fielder station wagons with right-hand drive were carried only by gray dealers.

The assembly of all versions of Toyota Corolla E140 is Japanese. In 2009, the car was restyled, which affected, in addition to external changes, many important components. In particular, the “robot”, which had not proven itself very well, was replaced with a classic hydraulic automatic machine.

Among the main advantages of the model are a reliable and durable suspension, a corrosion-resistant body, and an effective heating and air conditioning system. The disadvantages include the very high cost of maintenance and repairs, a rather simple and not the most comfortable interior, as well as a fairly low ground clearance (145 mm) with a small front overhang angle.

Motor

Most aftermarket cars come with a 1.6 liter engine (1ZR-FE with 124 hp). The unit is considered reliable, however, on early machines, due to the accumulation of carbon deposits in the cylinders, oil consumption increased significantly by 100-150 thousand. Usually, by replacing the rings and the cylinder head gasket, which is prone to burnouts, the problem was solved.

After modernization in 2009, the engine received a system for continuously variable valve lift adjustment, which had a positive effect on the life expectancy of the unit. But even pre-reform engines easily reached 300 thousand. kilometers. The timing chain usually lasted up to 150 thousand.

But the coolant pump and thermostat did not have a stable resource and could fail much earlier. The 1.33 (1NR-FE), 1.4 (4ZZ-FE) and 1.8 liter (1ZZ-FE) engines, which are rarer on our market, are not inferior to the 1.6 described above in terms of reliability. The main disadvantage of all these units is their tendency to coke and increased oil consumption at high mileage.

Transmission

The manual transmission on the Toyota Corolla E140 model does not raise any questions, although sometimes the clutch fails ahead of schedule. Its service life is largely determined by driving style. But the C50A robotic gearbox with one clutch is no different in reliability.

It is twitchy, breaks down quite often, and very few survive to the 150,000 km mark. Mainly actuators, clutch discs and control unit are covered. Buying a Corolla with such a transmission (especially if the “robot” on it has not yet been changed) is not the most preferable option.

After 2009, the proven and reliable Aisin hydromechanical 4-speed automatic transmission returned to restyled cars after 2009. It is, of course, far from the most efficient, but with proper maintenance its resource can easily reach 300 thousand kilometers.

Among other “sores” of this model, we can highlight the rather rapid wear of the front stabilizer bushings, the starter freezing in the cold (on pre-restyling) and door locks, which require regular maintenance of the brake caliper. Also, the plastic bushings in the steering rack quickly wear out, and many owners complain of a knock in the steering column due to play in the crosspiece and steering shaft gear.
