How to replace the timing belt on a Toyota Rav 4 with your own hands?

The gas distribution mechanism of a car is responsible for controlling the phases of supply and exhaust of gases to the engine cylinders. This occurs due to the transmission of torque from the crankshaft to the camshaft through the timing belt. The belt itself is a very simple part, but its wear or even rupture can lead to truly catastrophic consequences for the engine. In this material, we will look at how to replace the timing belt on a Toyota Rav 4 with your own hands.

Replacing the timing chain in Toyota Rav4

  • Difficulty of performing the work:

A part whose timely replacement ensures reliable engine operation is a timing chain or belt in a Toyota Rav4. Depending on which motor is installed, the timing of this procedure may vary.

In Toyota Rav4 with gasoline power units of 2.0 and 2.5 liters, a chain is installed that synchronizes the positions of the crankshaft and camshaft. In cars with a 2.2-liter diesel power unit, manufacturers have provided a timing belt that performs the same functions.

History of creation

Mitsubishi Motors needed a more powerful engine than the 4A30, and at the same time, an economical one in order to occupy a “niche” between the popular key-car Minica (minicars with an engine up to 700 cc) and power units of 1.3–1 .5 l. The company's designers decided to refine the first in the line of four-cylinder engines, equipping it with the GDI system.

The predecessor of the "thirty-first" - the 4A30 engine - was put into production in 1993. It was installed in the Mitsubishi Minica compact city car, which demonstrated a consumption rate of 1:30 (30 km per liter of fuel). The percentage indicator of high efficiency was successfully consolidated by simultaneously increasing the volume and power of the engine, and leaving the same layout of the unit.

Design changes affected the cylinder volume, cylinder diameter (from 60 to 6.6), location of valves and injectors. The compression ratio was increased from 9:1 to 9.5:1 and 11.0:1.

Pros and cons of timing chain

It is well known that a chain is much more reliable and has a longer service life than a belt. In addition, replacing the timing belt of a Toyota Rav4 chain drive is diagnosed in several ways, which can be read about below. That is why the timing of installing a new chain is very vague. In Rav4, this figure almost always exceeds the mark of 100 thousand km, or even 200.

With a belt drive everything is more pragmatic. The manufacturer recommends replacing it after reaching 90 thousand km, earlier or later. But in the latter case, the risk of breakage increases significantly. When installing the belt, a tension roller and pump must be installed.

The timing intervals for replacing the timing belt/chain largely depend on the conditions in which the vehicle is operated.

Approximate cost of maintenance

Taking into account the natural cyclical nature of regulated maintenance of Japanese-made Toyota RAV4 vehicles, prices for sequential and recurring maintenance will be approximately the same.

Therefore, the following approximate data can be given for prices. These are the minimum prices relevant in 2021 for owners of 3rd and 4th generation Toyota RAV4 crossovers. Prices are given only for the cost of consumables. In addition to paying for consumables, you will also need to pay for the work itself.

  • Maintenance from TO-1 to TO-3, as well as from TO-5 to TO-7 will cost the car owner at least 3 thousand rubles.
  • For maintenance after 4 years or with a mileage of 40 thousand kilometers, due to the need to replace additional consumables, you will have to pay 7.5 thousand rubles or more.
  • TO-8 can be called one of the most expensive, since its estimated price is 15-17 thousand rubles.

Further, having completed the scheduled maintenance-8, the regulations will be repeated. Of course, by the time the mileage on your crossover reaches the required levels, prices in the country may change dramatically. Therefore, we focus on what car services are asking for in 2019.

  • Please note that within 10 maintenance intervals every 100 thousand km. The spark plugs will need to be replaced. And this is 400 rubles for 1 piece.
  • The first scheduled replacement of the cooling fluid is carried out after 160 thousand km, that is, within the framework of TO-16. Replacement will cost approximately 3 thousand rubles.
  • Changing the oil in a manual transmission is traditionally cheaper than changing the oil in automatic transmissions. This is from 3 and 4.5 thousand rubles, respectively.
  • Along with the hanging belt, you will also have to change the roller. Included, it costs at least 7 thousand rubles.
  • A timing chain kit costs from 7.5 thousand rubles and above.

Please remember that these are indicative prices and only for the spare parts and consumables themselves. How much you will have to pay for the work itself depends on the specific car service.

Toyota RAV4 crossovers cannot be called cheap to maintain. But since the car is reliable and the main components are durable, objectively, you won’t have to spend a lot of money on maintenance every year. There are only a few TOs, such as TO-4 and TO-8, which are more expensive than others. Plus high prices for replacing oil in gearboxes, suspension belts, timing chains, etc.

Ways to find out if repairs are needed

It is impossible to determine the size of the timing belt after a certain mileage without removal, and this procedure itself is not part of the diagnosis. With a chain drive everything is much simpler. In order to determine whether the Rav4 timing chain needs to be replaced, you need to follow simple recommendations.

  1. Measure the length of the chain.

Using a caliper, measure the distance between the 8 links. The length of the section should not exceed 52.4 mm (2.063 inches). If this value is greater, a replacement must be made.

Using the same tool, the distance between 16 links is determined. It should not exceed 122.6 mm (4.827 inches). To obtain an accurate result, the circuit is measured in both cases in three randomly selected areas.

Measure the thickness of the chain tensioner shoe.

Use a caliper to measure shoe wear. The maximum wear value should not exceed 1.0 mm (0.039 in).

  • Measure the diameter of the timing chain sprocket.
  • Wrap the chain around the drive sprocket and measure the diameter. If it is less than 51.6 mm (2.031 inches) there are obvious signs of wear and both elements need to be replaced

    Measurements must be carried out in such a way that the measuring device touches the chain rollers.

Preparatory activities

It will not be superfluous to listen to the operation of the engine. The first sign of wear is increased noise in the engine compartment area. If during a visual inspection there is play on the camshaft sprockets in all directions and there is no tension, then replacing the timing chain on a Toyota Rav 4 is mandatory.

The replacement process is not complicated, but access to the components that need to be dismantled leaves much to be desired. Without experience or special tools (including measuring tools), this procedure should be left to specialists. It is important to remember that you must use only original spare parts according to the catalog number.

Before installation for Toyota Rav 4, you must purchase all parts. The set consists of:

  • chain guide;
  • chain tensioner shoe;
  • VVT system sprockets;
  • exhaust camshaft sprockets;
  • crankshaft sprockets;
  • crankshaft oil seal;
  • timing chains;
  • automatic chain tensioner.
  • You will also need a valve cover gasket and a tube of high temperature sealant.

    It is necessary to remove the negative terminal, placing the car securely on an inspection hole or lift, taking into account the need to jack up the engine. Prepare a container for antifreeze with a volume of at least 6.5 liters. Carefully drain the antifreeze from the radiator (bottom of the radiator) and cylinder block (under the exhaust manifold).

    Land Cruiser Prado 120 chain tags

    There are two heads in a car engine: right and left (determining the side in the direction of travel). Each includes intake and exhaust camshafts. On the exhaust, the mark is a dent in the gear that shows where the mounting chain link is attached. Clutches are installed on the intake camshafts. On both sides they are identical and also equipped with marks:

    When replacing the timing chain for Prado 120 4 l, put on according to the marks so that the teeth between the installation links are located next to the ebbs on the camshaft itself.

    The Prado 120 4 liter timing mark on the crankshaft looks like a small depression and is aligned parallel to the cast rib of the engine block. The key on the shaft sprocket should also be located opposite the block ebb.

    Disassembly for timing chain removal

    Replacing the Rav 4 chain begins with dismantling the following components and parts:

    • ignition module;
    • valve cover (unscrew 8 bolts, 2 nuts, 1 stud)4
    • generator;
    • water pump.

    Next, you need to jack up the engine and remove one support. To do this, perform the following operations.

    1. Unscrew 2 side bolts and 1 bolt located under the ABS block.
    2. Disconnect the support fastenings to the bracket by unscrewing 2 nuts and 1 bolt.
    3. Before removing the support, remove the VVT valve by unscrewing 1 10 mm bolt.

    Remove the right wheel and plastic protection.

  • Set TDC.
  • Remove the accessory drive belt.
  • Unscrew the tensioner mounting nut and remove the stud, and then remove it.
    In order to remove the tensioner, it is necessary to jack up the engine. Otherwise, you won’t be able to remove the part - the spar will get in the way.
  • 3 14mm bolts and remove the support bracket.
  • Having locked the crankshaft, unscrew the bolt and remove the crankshaft pulley. To block the crankshaft, engage 5th gear and insert a pry bar into the brake disc. After this, the bolt will unscrew without force.
  • Let's get started

    Remove the decorative plastic and unscrew the four bolts securing the ignition modules. We remove the modules.

    We unscrew eight bolts, two nuts and one stud on the 10th valve cover. The intake manifold is missing from the photo, since it was removed to disassemble the engine, you do not need to remove it.

    Remove the valve cover along with the gasket.

    Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Disconnect all wiring from the generator and unscrew the two bolts securing it. We remove the generator. Photo from the back.

    Jack up the engine. We remove the engine mount, unscrew three 14mm bolts. If the two side ones can be unscrewed using a cardan without any problems, then the third one is under the ABS block..., as well as two nuts and a 14mm bolt securing the support to the engine bracket. The VVT valve prevents you from removing the support; carefully remove it. Fastened with one 10mm bolt.

    We drain the antifreeze from the radiator and cylinder block.

    The valve on the block is located under the exhaust manifold. On the radiator on the left, below.

    Set the top dead center.

    Remove the front right wheel and plastic mudguard.

    The mark on the crankshaft pulley should be opposite the “0” mark on the timing cover.

    There are two marks on the camshaft sprockets opposite each other. If this does not happen, turn the crankshaft one revolution. The photo quality is poor because it was taken with a flexible camera. There is no other way to take a picture because the air conditioning, ABS and power steering pipes are in the way.

    Let's simulate the position on the removed parts.

    On the exhaust camshaft sprockets, mark the chain link opposite the top mark. On the VVT sprocket the link is opposite the long mark.

    Remove the accessory drive belt. Using a 19 key, use the special protrusion on the automatic tensioner to turn it clockwise and remove the belt. Loosen the tensioner mounting bolt.

    Unscrew the tensioner mounting nut.

    The spar into which the bolt rests prevents you from removing the tensioner. To get it out you will have to jack up the engine. We place a jack under the front part and unscrew the nut on the gearbox support and remove the bolt.

    Raise the front of the engine as much as possible and remove the tensioner. We also unscrew the pin on which it was held, since it will interfere with removing the timing chain cover.

    Also, by unscrewing three 14mm bolts, remove the support bracket.

    Unscrew the six bolts number 10 securing the pump.

    Remove the coolant pump. Two bolts are shorter than the others; they were not removed in the photo. We remember or mark places.

    We stop the crankshaft, unscrew the bolt and remove the crankshaft pulley. To lock the crankshaft, we use a simple method: engage fifth gear, insert a suitable-sized screwdriver into the brake disc so that it jams it against the brake caliper, and unscrew the bolt with a slight movement of the hand.

    Remove the following elements:

    • timing chain tensioner.
    • timing cover.
    • power steering pump.
    • sensor and rotor that determine the position of the crankshaft.

    Be sure to place a mark on the chain link opposite the crankshaft sprocket mark. Remove the old chain and crankshaft sprocket. Attach the new chain and make sure that all marks on the new chain match.

    After securing the camshaft with a wrench, unscrew the VVT clutch bolt and remove the VVT sprocket.

    The disassembly process is complete. Wash the parts that will be installed with the new ones from dirt, sealant and oil. It is PROHIBITED to turn the crankshaft and camshaft.

    Instructions for replacing timing belt

    The process of replacing the timing chain on a Prado 120 with a diesel engine is labor-intensive and consists of a number of steps. They must be performed consistently and clearly.

    The car is prepared for replacement, the battery and protection are disconnected, oil and coolant are drained.

    Afterwards, access to the engine is provided so that the timing belt is visible.

    The next step is to align the crankshaft pulley according to the dead spots. We must not forget about the belts, viscous coupling, and fan that need to be removed. You will have to remove the cooling radiator, air filters, and intake manifold. Next, you should disconnect the sensors, ignition and injectors from the wiring harnesses to de-energize. They are removed along with the valve covers.

    Then you need to remove:

    Unscrew the fastening bolts from the pan and the front cover, after which it is removed to the side.

    Then the marks are installed, the main chain, tensioner and damper are removed, as well as the chain from the camshafts. Remaining sealant, O-rings and gaskets must be removed.

    Only after these stages the new spare part is installed according to the marks.

    Then all the parts are assembled in reverse order.

    Assembly with new parts

      Install the exhaust camshaft and crankshaft VVT damper and sprockets.

    The camshaft marks located on the new chain should be aligned with the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft. They are located six links away.

    Check that the chain running from the exhaust camshaft sprocket to the crankshaft sprocket (via the VVT sprocket) is under tension.

    Make sure that the camshaft and crankshaft marks match.

  • Reinstall the timing cover using sealant.
  • Install a new tensioner.
    The tensioner pin should face up. Bring the tensioner into working position by pressing the top of the shoe until it stops. To check, use the material at hand (wire) and try to move the pin. If she gave in, then everything is fine.
  • Lubricate the timing chain and sprockets with engine oil.
  • Turn the crankshaft two turns.
  • Check the marks located on the crankshaft pulley and between the camshaft sprockets. You can ignore the marks located on the chain, as they will move. This is due to the fact that there are fewer teeth on the crankshaft sprocket than the number of chain links.

    The rest of the assembly of all components and parts is carried out in the reverse order. Take into account the tightening torques.

    Toyota RAV4. Engine 3S-FE. Toothed belt and its pulleys

    – by pulling up and turning at the same time, remove the tips with high-voltage wires 6 (see figure - 3.11) from the spark plugs; – clean the spark plugs with a jet of compressed air, which will prevent dirt from getting into the engine cylinder after turning out the spark plugs. Remove the spark plugs; – remove the poly-V-belts driving the mounted units; – remove the generator and generator bracket; – separate the protective box 14 for the wiring harness from the front part of the engine; – using a jack through a wooden block, support the engine by the oil pan. Remove the 3 bolts and the right engine mount; – Unscrew the screws, disconnect the rods and wires and remove the upper casing 3 of the toothed belt and the gasket;

    Figure - 3.12. TDC mark on the cylinder head cover, visible through the small hole in the camshaft timing belt pulley

    – set the piston of the first cylinder to TDC (compression stroke position). Check that the TDC mark on the cylinder head cover is visible through the small hole in the camshaft timing belt pulley (see figure - 3.12); – use chalk, a marker or paint to mark the direction of rotation of the toothed belt, and also apply alignment marks to the camshaft pulley and the toothed belt. If during installation the timing belt rotates in the other direction, this will lead to its destruction;

    Figure - 3.Location of the tension roller bolt and removal of the spring

    – loosen the bolt securing the tension roller and remove the spring (see figure - 3.13). Remove the timing belt from the pulleys. If it is necessary to remove the cylinder head, camshaft or replace the camshaft sealing ring, it is not necessary to remove the timing belt from the crankshaft pulley;

    Figure - 3.14. Using wrenches to hold the camshaft from turning and loosening the timing belt pulley bolt

    – if the camshaft timing belt pulley is worn or damaged, remove the cylinder head cover. Holding the camshaft from turning with a wrench (see figure - 3.14) by the hexagon, unscrew the fastening bolt and remove the toothed belt pulley from the camshaft;

    Figure - 3.15. Using a screwdriver blade to secure the flywheel from turning and unscrewing the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt

    – remove the cover covering the hole for inspecting the flywheel, and use the blade of a large flat-head screwdriver to hold the gear ring of the flywheel to secure it from turning (see figure - 3.15). Remove the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt. Since the bolt is too tight, use a wrench with a large shoulder. Using a pry bar or vibration damper remover, remove the pulley from the crankshaft (see figure - 3.16). Before removing the pulley, make sure that the piston of the first cylinder is installed at TDC;

    Figure - 3.16. Using a pry bar to remove a pulley from the crankshaft

    – Unscrew the bolts (see figure - 3.17) and remove the lower timing belt casing and its gasket. Remove the toothed belt guide from the crankshaft; – if the toothed belt will be reinstalled, apply alignment marks to the crankshaft pulley and the toothed belt; – slide the timing belt off the pulley and remove it from the engine;

    Figure - 3.18. Using a puller to remove a pulley from the crankshaft

    – If the pulley is worn or damaged or the front crankshaft seal ring needs to be replaced, remove the timing belt pulley from the crankshaft. The pulley should be easy to remove from the crankshaft. If the pulley is seated very tightly, remove it with a puller (see figure - 3.18). To attach the puller grips, drill 2 holes in the pulley and tap them. Examination

    Check the condition and smooth rotation of the idler and tension rollers. Check the condition and measure the length of the spring, which for engines from 1996 to 1997 should be 46.0 mm, and for engines from 1998 to 2000 - 42.0 mm. A timing belt rupture while the engine is running can cause the pistons to strike the valves, which can cause the valves to become distorted. Check valve clearances. On deformed valves they will be significantly larger than required. If the teeth of the timing belt have chipped, the water pump, oil pump or camshaft may have seized. If the outer surface of the timing belt is significantly worn or peeled, check the condition of the idler and tension roller tracks. If wear or damage is found on only one side of the belt, check the timing belt guide and alignment of the timing belt pulleys.

    Installation

    Perform installation in the following order: – wipe off all dirt and grease in the front part of the engine, in the area where the toothed belt operates; – if removed, then reinstall the idler and tension rollers and the tension roller spring. Move the tension roller to the maximum spring tension and temporarily secure it in this position with a bolt; – Install the timing belt pulleys on the camshaft and crankshaft. Install the crankshaft pulley so that the teeth of the crankshaft sensor are located on the side of the front engine cover; – Check that the TDC mark on the cylinder head cover is visible through the small hole in the camshaft timing belt pulley (see Figure 3.12), and the crankshaft pulley key is directed towards the TDC mark on the front cover. In this case, the piston of the first cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke; – Install the timing belt on the pulleys of the crankshaft, oil pump, water pump and idler and tension rollers. When reinstalling the timing belt, align the previously applied marks;

    When is replacement required?

    According to the maintenance regulations, the timing belt on the Toyota Rav 4 should be replaced every 60 - 75 thousand kilometers. However, depending on driving style, climate, presence or absence of a trailer or other factors, the service life of the part may decrease. To avoid unpleasant surprises, visual inspection of the timing belt should be carried out every 25 thousand kilometers. It is important to carry out visual diagnostics, since it is very difficult to determine the malfunction of a part by indirect signs. The fact is that signs indicating a problem with the timing system may be associated with a breakdown of other components of the car.

    The following signs indicate the need for diagnosis:

    • Exhaust gases are black in color, with a pronounced burning smell;
    • Ringing and knocking in the engine;
    • Power loss at low or high speeds;
    • Engine vibration when driving.

    The main sign that the timing belt needs to be replaced is the presence of abrasions and chips on its teeth. In addition, it is worth paying attention to the outer surface of the part. If there are breaks, cracks, dents or other mechanical damage on it, it should be replaced immediately.

    What is the timing belt replacement interval for Prado 120

    Recommendations for replacing the part are specified in the vehicle manufacturer's operating instructions. But in reality, the timing differs due to the conditions in which the machine is used. The company generates its data based on field tests, but the real operating conditions of the car are very different from them.

    According to the general regulations, replacing the timing chain with a 1GR-FE engine on a Toyota Prado 120 is carried out once every 150-200 thousand kilometers. However, if the car is driven off-road or used in changing climatic conditions, then this procedure is recommended to be carried out more often - at 100 thousand kilometers.

    When the driver notices problems with the machine, an emergency replacement is required.

    The fact is that while the engine is running, the chain bends and heats up. This causes sagging. The result is a decrease in strength. The link connections wear out. For this reason, they jump from one gear tooth to another. In this case, it is necessary to quickly replace the part to prevent serious damage.

    Preparing for work

    You should begin preparing for work by selecting a new timing belt. Today there are many companies producing timing belts. The undisputed leaders are undoubtedly Conitech and Gates. Their products are of almost impeccable quality, however, their prices are steep.

    Parts from Dayco, Bosch or Lemforder may not be as good, but they are much cheaper. It makes no sense to go into deeper details; here everyone will choose a manufacturer based on preferences and finances. However, it should be mentioned that it is best to get components for the car from an authorized dealer. Of course, few people are satisfied with a markup of 30–50%, but this is a kind of guarantor of safety. At the moment, there are many fakes, and they are so good that they can fool even experienced sellers. Naturally, all the quality goes into the visual design and in practice, fake belts quickly deform and break.

    Before you start replacing the timing belt on a Toyota Rav 4, you should park the car in the garage, block the rear wheels and let the engine cool. Carrying out replacement on a hot engine can cause serious burns. In addition, on a hot or even warm engine it will not be possible to properly tension the belt, which can lead to accelerated wear. Immediately before replacement, for safety reasons, you should remove the keys from the ignition and disconnect the negative terminals of the battery.

    To replace you will need the following tools:

    • Set of open-end and spanner wrenches;
    • Ratchet and socket set;
    • Torque wrench;
    • Candle key;
    • Pulley lock;
    • Tripod;
    • Jack;
    • Rust solvent WD-40 or its equivalent.

    Do-it-yourself replacement of the timing belt on a Toyota RAV4

    The procedure for replacing a belt on a RAV4 consists of three stages and is carried out according to the following algorithm.

    Preparing to replace the belt

    Sequencing:

    1. We dismantle the front right wheel and install a tripod under it;
    2. We dismantle the plastic engine cover, then remove the high-voltage wires and unscrew the spark plugs;
    3. We unscrew the two fastening bolts holding the plastic case and bend it to the sides;
    4. We remove the belt of the mounted units; to do this, loosen its tension roller;
    5. Unscrew the mounting bolts of the generator and move it to the side. There is no need to disconnect the wires;
    6. Unscrew the fastening bolts of the power steering reservoir and the fastening of the tubes. After this, move the tank to the side without removing the tubes;
    7. Jack up the engine. It is best to install a wooden block between the engine and the jack;
    8. We fix the pulley. This can be done using a special tool. If it is not there, you can insert the shank of a drill bit or a metal pin into one of the holes in the pulley. We put a spanner on the pin, and a piece of pipe on the wrench. This structure must rest against the ground. Next, loosen the pulley mounting bolts;
    9. We unscrew the bolts securing the right engine mount and its bracket, and then dismantle them;
    10. Loosen the fastenings of the power steering pump, then move it to the side and remove the power steering belt;
    11. We dismantle the top cover of the NRM and remove it.

    Belt replacement procedure

    Sequencing:

    1. Align the marks on the lower pulley with the mark on the lower casing of the gas distribution system;
    2. We dismantle the crankshaft pulley;
    3. Unscrew the bottom cover of the gas distribution system;
    4. We loosen the fastenings of the tension roller, then press the roller down and tighten the bolt;
    5. Remove the timing belt;
    6. If necessary, we dismantle the parasitic and tension rollers;
    7. We clean the surface under the gas distributor caps from dirt, dust and smudges;
    8. Installing a new belt and rollers;
    9. We mount a new parasitic roller and tighten the fastening bolt with a force of 42 Nm;
    10. We mount the idler roller and its spring. Then we press it down and tighten the fastening bolts;
    11. Check the marks on the pulleys. There is a mark on the small crankshaft pulley that should coincide with the mark near the oil deposit;
    12. We put on a new timing belt. It should be put on so that the slack is on the tensioner side;
    13. Loosen the tensioner fastenings;
    14. Install the belt guide washer and the lower timing case. Next, you should install the pulley and attach its fastenings;
    15. We turn the crankshaft clockwise two full turns and check the marks. If the marks are lost, the belt should be removed and the marks should be set again;
    16. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the mark on the pulley coincides with the mark located five centimeters to the left of the zero mark;
    17. Tighten the tensioner mounting bolts with a force of 42 Nm;
    18. We mount the upper timing belt cover;
    19. We carry out further assembly in reverse order.

    At this point, the procedure for replacing the timing belt on a Toyota Rav 4 can be considered complete.

    Installing a new belt

    The final part of replacing the timing belt of the 4A-FE engine and probably the simplest. We check the tags we have set. They should remain in the same position. After this, the new belt is put on both pulleys and tensioned with a roller. To check the tension, you need to manually turn the gas distribution mechanism and, if necessary, adjust the tension.

    Installing the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke of Toyota RAV4

    Tool:

    Notes:

    The piston of the 1st cylinder is set to the TDC (top dead center) position of the compression stroke so that when carrying out work related to removing the camshaft drive belt, the valve timing is not disturbed. If the valve timing is incorrect, the engine will not operate normally.

    Set TDC according to the marks on the exhaust camshaft sprocket and on the variable valve timing system (WT-i) mechanism (when setting according to the marks on the crankshaft pulley, the piston of either the 1st or 4th cylinder may be in this position). After this, be sure to make sure that the marks on the crankshaft pulley match. If the marks on the crankshaft pulley do not match, it means that the valve timing is incorrect (the piston of the 1st cylinder is not set to the TDC position). In this case, it is necessary to remove the timing chain (belt) and turn the crankshaft until the marks match.

    1. First, you need to jack up the right front side (the jacking point is indicated in the photo) of the Toyota RAV4 and remove the right front wheel using a wheel wrench.

    2. Remove the right side engine splash guard as described in this article.

    3. Remove the decorative engine cover as described here.

    4. Remove the cylinder head cover as described in this article.

    5. Using a wrench, turn the engine crankshaft by the pulley bolt until the mark (groove) on the crankshaft pulley coincides with the mark on the timing chain cover boss.

    6. Check the alignment of the marks on the exhaust camshaft sprocket and on the variable valve timing system (WT-i) mechanism with the marks (arrows) on the camshaft bearing caps. If the boundaries do not match, turn the crankshaft one revolution.
