How to replace the timing belt on a Toyota Hilux yourself?

Failure to promptly replace the timing belt can lead to serious vehicle damage, in some cases with a catastrophic outcome. Unfortunately, many car enthusiasts do not realize the danger of a worn belt or naively believe that it will last forever.

When to change?

According to the maintenance regulations, on a Hilux diesel, the timing belt should be replaced every 75-80 thousand kilometers. Naturally, the part may fail even earlier. Here everything will depend on the operating mode, temperature, climate and driving style. The lifespan of the part is also affected by how loaded the vehicle is and whether a trailer is used. To avoid sad and very costly misunderstandings, the timing system should be inspected regularly. It is advisable to do this every 20 thousand kilometers.

When inspecting, pay special attention to the belt teeth. Cracked or worn teeth are a sure sign of excessive wear on the part. If it begins to crack or delaminate, the part must be replaced as soon as possible.

What happens to the engine when the timing belt breaks?

The camshafts are located in the cylinder head. They are equipped with so-called cams, which push the spring valves at a certain moment and thereby open or close the hole for the inlet and outlet of gases. The shafts are installed in strict accordance with the regulations established by the car manufacturer, since their rotation cycle is strictly adjusted in relation to the stroke of the pistons in the engine itself.

Gears are installed at the end of the shafts, which a rubber timing belt with a metal core bends around and drives. It, in turn, is connected to the main crankshaft of the internal combustion engine.

If a part breaks, the initially set cycle of the camshaft is disrupted and the cams begin to untimely press the valve, for example, when the piston is raised. But that's not so bad. At some point, the camshaft cam will fall into the valve-raised phase and, due to collision and inertia, will bend it. A bent part breaks the cylinder head, which leads to expensive repairs or even replacement of the engine.

Attention! It is important to monitor the condition of the entire gas distribution unit and change the drive every 65-85 thousand kilometers maximum.

How to choose a timing belt?

When choosing a belt, first of all you should determine the specific model of the part that will suit your car. This can be done by consulting with an official dealer, or by checking the vehicle's operating manual.

Next, you should decide on the manufacturer. Gates and Conitech produce quality parts, but their prices are clearly inflated. Dayco products are somewhat inferior in quality, but are also cheaper. However, lately a lot of bootleggers have started masquerading as them, so buy with caution. In turn, Bosch products boast good quality and very affordable prices. If you can't afford Gates and Conitech products, you should choose Bosch.

You should buy belts from official dealers to avoid getting fake ones. However, instead of original parts, take analogues. The fact is that the “original” belts are the same belts from Gates or Conitech on which the car manufacturer’s logo was stuck.

Replacing the timing belt on a Toyota Hilux

With due patience, any motorist can remove the timing belt on a Toyota Hilux with his own hands. However, before this you should prepare the car.

First, you should install the car in the garage and let the engine cool for two to three hours. There are two reasons for this:

  • working in a hot engine compartment you can easily get several serious burns;
  • a belt installed on a hot or even warm engine will simply sag, which can lead to serious problems in the future.

Immediately before replacement, remove the keys from the ignition, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and prepare the following set of tools:

  • Set of open-end wrenches;
  • Ratchet and socket set;
  • Screwdrivers;
  • rust solvent WD-40;
  • torque wrench.

Replacement procedure

Replacing the timing belt on a Toyota Hilux yourself is as follows:

  1. Drain the coolant from the system and remove the expansion tank;
  2. Remove the radiator hose;
  3. Remove the power steering reservoir from its mounts;
  4. We dismantle the air filter and its housing;
  5. We dismantle the impeller and fan casing;
  6. Loosen the tensioner and remove the belt of the mounted units;
  7. Unscrew the fastening bolts and remove the gas distributor casing;
  8. Using a 22mm wrench, turn the crankshaft clockwise until the marks on the pulleys coincide with the marks on the body, then fix the pulleys;
  9. We dismantle the parasitic and tension rollers;
  10. Remove the old timing belt;
  11. We put on a new belt. On original parts, the yellow mark should coincide with the mark on the pulleys;
  12. We install a new tension roller (do not pull out the pin yet);
  13. We mount the parasitic roller;
  14. Let's check the marks again. To do this, you need to rotate the crankshaft pulley two full turns;
  15. Pull out the tensioner pin;
  16. Reinstall the timing case;
  17. We carry out further assembly in the reverse order;

At this point, the replacement procedure for Toyota Hilux 2.5 can be considered complete.

Repair stages

Replacing the timing belt is carried out exclusively on a cold engine. Firstly, this way the master will not get burned, and secondly, on a hot or even warm power unit, the new drive will sag, which will also lead to inevitable serious damage. It is important to immediately prepare spare parts before starting any manipulations with the engine: a new belt, a parasitic belt and a tension roller with a pin. On a cold engine, repair work begins in the following order:

The last tool cannot be ignored, since each bolt or nut during such repair work must be tightened to a specific tightening torque, which is prescribed in the machine manufacturer’s regulations. You can view this value in the repair manual for each specific series of motors.

This is how the timing belt is replaced on Toyota Hilux cars.

Consequences of untimely replacement

Failure to promptly replace the timing belt does not bode well for the vehicle and can even lead to catastrophic consequences.

Firstly, the teeth of a worn part begin to slip on the gears, which reduces the driving properties of the car. In addition, slipping teeth can break off and get under the belt, which will lead to deformation of the rollers and the appearance of dents on the part. This will only accelerate its wear and tear.

The most serious consequence is part breakage.

This leads to mismatch of engine strokes. As a result of misalignment, the pistons begin to hit the valves, bending them.

Labeling

On the Toyota Land Cruiser 200, the timing marks are set using a ratchet. You need to rotate the crankshaft using a ratchet bolt, without a pulley. According to the regulations, the marks on the timing gears must coincide with the engine mark. The alignment of the marks means that the first cylinder is at top dead center (TDC). They are graded by risk, not by “T.” According to the marks, you need to put on the belt so that the markings on it coincide with the “control” points.

The procedure is quite simple. The first time you can do it together with a mechanic at a service station, so as not to make mistakes when installing parts and reassembling.

Toyota Hilux attachment drive belts

1. Check the drive belt for damage or excessive wear and ensure it is seated correctly in the pulley grooves. If the belt “squeals” or slips, check the condition of the contact surfaces of the pulley and the belt tension. If any defects are found, replace the drive belt.

– Detachment of rubber from the cord on the inner (from the side of the ridges) and outer surfaces of the belt, exposure or damage to the cord, separation of the ridge from the rubber base, cracks, peeling or wear on the side surfaces of the belt and on the side surfaces of the belt ridges are not allowed. Replace the belt if necessary.

– Do not allow the drive belts to become oily.

– After installing the belt, check that it is seated correctly on the pulleys. Check with your hand at the bottom of the pulleys to see if there is a loose groove on the pulley.

2. Check the accessory drive belt.

Note: Since the engine is equipped with an automatic tensioner, there is no need to check the belt deflection, just make sure that the tensioner provides belt tension. (2TR-FE)

a) Make sure that the mark on the tensioner falls within the range “A” shown in the figure.

b) If the mark is in zone “B”, replace the belt.

a) Make sure that the mark on the tensioner falls within the range “B” shown in the figure.

b) If the mark is outside zone “B”, replace the belt.

2. Check the tensioner.

a) Remove the belt from the tensioner pulley. Rock the tensioner left and right to make sure it moves without jamming.

b) If the tensioner does not operate satisfactorily, replace it.

c) Install the belt.

Replacing the drive belt of mounted units.

a) Loosen the belt tension by turning the tensioner by the hexagonal section (shown in the figure with an arrow) clockwise and remove the belt.

Note: Do not loosen the tensioner pulley bolt to remove the belt.

b) Turn the tensioner clockwise by the hexagonal section and put on the belt.

Replacing the drive belt of mounted units.

a) Release the belt tension by turning the tensioner pulley by the bolt clockwise and remove the belt.

b) Place the belt on all pulleys except idler pulley No. 2.

c) Turn the tensioner pulley by the bolt clockwise and put the belt on the intermediate pulley No. 2.

d) Make sure that the mark on the belt falls within the range shown in the figure in the “Check” subsection.

1 – generator, 2 – intermediate pulley, 3 – power steering pump, 4 – fan pulley, 5 – air conditioning compressor pulley, 6 – crankshaft pulley, 7 – automatic tensioner.

c) Make sure that the mark on the belt falls within the range shown in the figure in the “Check” subsection.

Timing Belt (1KD-FTV, 2KD-FTV)

Timing belt. 1 – camshaft pulley No. 2, 2 – timing belt tensioner, 3 – camshaft pulley No. 1.

The timing belt is replaced every 100,000 km. There is an automatic reminder system for the need to replace the timing belt using the “T-BELT” indicator.

After replacing the timing belt, you must reset the timing belt replacement counter to zero.

The procedures for replacing and checking the timing belt are described in the chapter “1KD-FTV (3.0 l), 2KD-FTV (2.5 l) engines - mechanical part”.

Toyota Hilux. Resetting the drive belt replacement indicator GR-U1 “T-BELT”

After replacing the timing belt, you need to reset the meter: switch the odometer/trip meters display to odometer mode and turn off the ignition, press and hold

odometer mode switch, turn on the ignition and wait 5 s., release the odometer mode switch and, within 5 s, press it again, a two-digit number corresponding to the mileage until the next replacement will be displayed (x10,000 km); to change the value, press the switch (if a pause exceeds 30 s, the display will switch to odometer mode), after setting the desired value, hold the switch for 5 s, the display will switch to odometer mode and the indicator should go out.

Improved technical characteristics

Chassis tuning from Whiteline for Hilux 1988-1995. improved suspension characteristics:

Chip tuning from ADACT made it possible to increase the engine power to 20-30%; after the firmware, the power increased from 171 to 205 hp, and the torque increased from 360 Nm to 432 Nm.

To increase the service life of the suspension and strengthen the structure of the entire chassis, it is necessary to replace all rubber bushings with polyurethane ones. Reinforced springs withstand heavy loads and shocks when driving off-road.
