Which oil is best for the Toyota Camry - this question, perhaps, worries the owners of a 5-seater sedan more than others. The legendary Japanese car Toyota Camry is assembled at car factories in Japan, the USA, Australia, and Russia. Today the production of the ninth generation is underway. Starting from the fifth generation, it is equipped with a gasoline engine, and the hybrid modification is also especially popular in its homeland. In Russia, the model consistently ranks high in the ranking of best-selling cars, which is partly due to the presence of reliable gasoline engines in the line of power units.
About tolerances
Gasoline engines:
- 6AR-FSE, 2AR-FE, 2GR-FKS, 1AZ-FE, 2AZ-FE, 2GR-FE, 1MZ-FE, 5S-FE, 3VZ-FE
Diesel engines:
- No
The car manual says that 2.0 and 2.5 liter engines (6AR-FSE and 2AR-FE) should be filled with Toyota branded universal lubricant of SM, SN API categories. Engines installed in cars made before 2015 must be filled with original oil with a tolerance of at least SM. Only synthetics of the SN category according to API should be poured into the engines of new cars. According to the ACEA classification, the lubricant must be at least A3/B4, and it is best to use A5/B5 fluid.

Toyota Camry engine oil - suitable
Original oil
After 100-150 thousand kilometers, it is recommended to switch to a more viscous engine oil, especially if the car is operated in the southern region. The engine of a seventh generation car (2AZ-FE, 2GR-FE) should be filled with oil with API SM approval or higher. The preferred fluid is a multigrade motor oil with a viscosity index of 5W-40 according to SAE.
The Toyota Camry 3.0 1MZ-FE engine works well with any lubricant not lower than SJ. The same material should be poured into old 2.2 and 3.0-liter engines 5S-FE, 3VZ-FE or a higher class, for example, SL or SM. The preferred viscosity is 5W-30 at temperatures above +10 degrees Celsius.

How much oil is in a Toyota Camry engine?
How many liters should I fill?
Toyota Camry oil volume is:
- 4.2 liters for 2.0 1AZ-FE engine with filter;
- 4.3 liters for 2.0 2AZ-FE engine with filter;
- 4.7 liters for 3.0 1MZ-FE engine with filter;
- 6.1 liters for 3.5 2GR-FE engine with filter;
- 4.4 liters for 2.0 engines 6AR-FSE, 2AR-FE with filter.
Tip: We recommend that you always keep a small amount of engine oil in reserve, since during the operation of the vehicle it may be necessary to add fluid to the internal combustion engine.
What's wrong with the Toyota 2.4 (2AZ-FE) one-off engine?
Toyota Camry 40 series is one of the most popular and sought-after cars on the secondary market. Almost all models offered are equipped with a 2.4-liter engine. In this article we will talk about the nuances and problems of this power unit.
The 2.4-liter engine bears the index 2AZ-FE and, accordingly, belongs to the AZ family, which appeared on Toyotas in 2000.
The 2AZ-FE engine block is aluminum, with liners placed in it and an open jacket of the cooling system. The motor is equipped with two balancer shafts.
The cylinder head, cast from aluminum alloy, contains 16 valves driven by two camshafts. The intake camshaft is equipped with a VVTi phase shifter. The timing drive uses a fairly durable chain. However, the 2AZ-FE engine still requires specific maintenance: valve thermal clearances must be checked and adjusted every 100,000 km, because There are no hydraulic compensators in their drive.
This engine is found not only in the Camry, but also in all front-wheel drive Toyotas. Including hybrid ones.
Until 2008, the 2AZ-FE engine was produced unchanged. Its power is 160 hp. A minor modernization took place in 2008: the compression ratio increased from 9.6 to 9.8, and the power reached 166 hp.
The hybrid version of this 2.4-liter engine is designated 2AZ-FXE. This engine operates on the Miller cycle, differs in pistons, camshafts and control program. This engine produces 130 hp. and has a geometric compression ratio of 12:5 (the actual compression ratio, of course, is lower).
Why disposable?
Toyota engineers followed the general trend and did not offer any repair sizes of pistons, rings and liners for this engine. Therefore, in case of any problems with the cylinder-piston group, you have to compare the cost of “creative” boring or liner and the purchase of a contract motor.
In general, the 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE engine can travel more than half a million km without significant problems. However, he is not without birth defects that you need to be aware of.
Why does he “rip his head off”?
The cylinder head of the 2AZ-FE engine is very thermally loaded and under high load on the engine (driving in traffic jams in the summer, a long climb uphill in the heat), it overheats, which leads to deformation. As they say, the cylinder head “becomes a house.”
The tightness of the cylinder head and its gasket to the block is broken. In this case, antifreeze instantly breaks through into the cylinders from the open cooling jacket of the block.
On the contrary, gases from the cylinders rush into the cooling system: “gases” appear in the expansion tank and steam appears from the exhaust pipe.
And when unscrewing the cylinder head bolts of the 2AZ-FE engine, some give in without any effort at all. This means that the bolts have “moved away”, because the threads in the aluminum block simply broke off. Usually the threads of the bolts securing the cylinder head in the middle break off.
Of course, this complicates repairs and increases costs. You have to cut a new thread or insert threaded bushings (screws) and “screw them” to them.
The problem was recognized by Toyota. Quite a few 2AZ-FE engine blocks were replaced under warranty.
Since 2006, the production of modernized blocks with optimized circulation of coolant in its upper part began.
Causes of oil consumption
The 2AZ-FE engine is characterized by increased oil consumption due to waste. The reasons for the “oil glutton” are different:
- 2AZ-FE engines for the North American market (many of these machines were imported from the USA) received unsuccessful oil scraper rings from the assembly line. A significant oil burn began after a run of 80,000 km (50,000 miles).
- 2AZ-FE engines produced since 2006 have an oily appetite. Such engines have an improved block, on which the threads for the cylinder head bolts hold much better. However, due to miscalculations and defects, such engines consume oil more readily. To fix the problem, it is proposed to replace all pistons assemblies.
- Another reason for the increased oil consumption was also explained by the manufacturer. As it turned out, due to the design features of the 2AZ-FE unit, when the engine brakes, a strong vacuum occurs in the intake manifold. Because of this, oil is literally sucked into the intake and burns in the cylinders.
- Oil consumption on the 2AZ-FE engine increases with mileage due to natural wear of the cylinder walls and oil rings. Sometimes you can only get by by replacing the pistons and rings. But usually they do not resort to such repairs and continue to operate the engine. Then the situation may reach the point where the cylinders become an ellipse, and the gap between the walls and the pistons increases. As a result, the 2AZ-FE engine will begin to operate with piston knocking. In this case, either engine repair or relining of the thin-walled block.
Toyota Camry 2.5 oil
In practice, car owners prefer to pour oil into the Toyota Camry 2.5 engine with a viscosity of 5W30, however, there are adherents of 0W20 viscosity (this is a standard parameter for cars operated in Japan).
If we proceed from the 5W30 parameter, then the choice is simply extensive, but the original product is, of course, best suited:
- Toyota Motor Oil SM 5 W-30
If we consider 0W20 , then you can choose the original product:
- Toyota 0W20 Formula XS
Original SAE 0W-20 engine oil is designed for the latest Toyota engines. It has high fluidity, provides excellent fuel efficiency and the best environmental performance. Should be used only for those Toyota car models for which its use is recommended in the Owner's Manual.
If you are not a supporter of the original oil, then you can use an analogue from the Belgian manufacturer WOLF:
- Wolf Ecotech 0W20
Engine weaknesses
The main problem with Toyota 2.4 2AZ engines is the same as with 1AZ power units - weak threads in the head mounting block. It leads to depressurization of the joint, which is accompanied by:
- coolant leaks from under the gasket;
- probable engine overheating;
- violation of the adjacent plane of the head.
The oil pump is located in the crankcase and is driven by an additional chain.
When starting the power plant from a cold state, noisy operation of the VVT-I system is observed, and errors occur in the valve timing and in the VVT-I system. This problem is treated by replacing the intake camshaft sprocket with a modified version.
Periodically, noisy operation of the cooling system pump is noted, which is accompanied by the formation of a leak. To eliminate such a defect, it is recommended to change the pump every forty thousand kilometers.
The plastic intake manifold may produce extraneous noise when starting the engine from a cold state or when accelerating sharply. Quite often, errors occur in the VVT-I system due to clogging of the VVT-i valve filter.
There is an increased consumption of engine oil after the power unit has traveled one hundred thousand kilometers. On average, oil is burned from 200 to 300 ml per 1000 km.
What is the replacement interval?
Toyota recommends changing the oil every 10 thousand kilometers. But keep in mind that, if possible, the oil in the Toyota Camry engine should be completely changed once every 5-7 thousand kilometers. The manufacturer's recommendations are given taking into account the mild Japanese climate and operation of the vehicle in an ideal environment.
How often should you change the oil in a Toyota Camry automatic transmission to avoid major repairs?
