Toyota Camry is a mid-size D-class car, initially available in various body styles, among which only the four-door sedan is relevant today. Just as in the case of the 2AZ, the Camry 2.5 2AR-FE / -FSE / -FXE (ASV40) engine was filled with synthetic 5W30 at the factory. In addition to factory oil, motor oils from categories SL, SM or SN, ILSAC with viscosity 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30 are allowed. And also according to API classification or ILSAC all-season lubricants - 15W-40 or 20W-50.
Despite the wide range of recommended lubricants, in some cases, regardless of the volume, the engine may operate differently (quiet or loud, soft or rough).
Description of the 2AZFE motor device
The 2AZ FE internal combustion engine was assembled not only in Japan. Assembly plants are located in China and the USA. The internal combustion engine itself is an aluminum cylinder block with cast iron liners. The liners were fused inside the 2AZ FE engine block.
The surface of the cylinder block was not specially leveled. Thanks to the uneven surface, heat dissipation increased. The 2AZ FE engine stopped getting very hot.
The cooling jacket of the series motor is open. The cylinder head consists of 16 valves. There are no hydraulic compensators on the engine. This drawback is noted by many experienced car owners. After 100 thousand kilometers you have to manually adjust the thermal clearances of the 2AZ FE valves. If you continue to drive with unadjusted valves, performance drops and the internal combustion engine begins to stall at idle.
A valve timing system was installed on the engine on the intake camshaft. This made it possible to increase the power of the unit. The timing mechanism drive was equipped with a chain rather than a belt. A block of balancer shafts was installed on the engine. It was included in the mandatory configuration of any engine with a volume of over 2 liters.

The crankshaft is forged. It consists of 5 necks and 8 counterweights. The crankshaft is located on the main bearing caps. The axis itself is shifted by 10 mm relative to the axes of the cylinders. In production, this feature is called desaxage. Thanks to the displacement, engineers reduced wear on the crankshaft and reduced the force of the piston on the cylinder.

However, the balancer shafts coming after the crankshaft create another disadvantage for such engines. They wear out quickly. Because to reduce the noise produced by the shafts, gears made of polymer material are used.
Pistons for the 2AZ FE engine are made of light alloy metal. The skirt on them is moderately lightweight. An anti-friction coating is applied to it. Therefore, the skirt does not wear out after a short period of engine operation.
The pistons are connected together with the connecting rods via pins. The latter are specially made to float so as not to disrupt the work of the porno.
On modifications of the 2AZ FE engine after 2006, a special shirt appeared. It promotes more powerful circulation of coolant in the upper part of the engine. This has a beneficial effect on heat dissipation and thermoregulation of the motor.

The 2AZ FE oil pump is located in the crankcase. The trochoid type pump is driven by the operation of another circuit that comes to it from the crankshaft. Experienced mechanics note that this improvement has increased the number of moving parts. This reduced the service life of the engine, since a large number of moving parts are subject to rapid wear, and major repairs are not provided. However, thanks to the additional chain, the conditions for pumping lubricant when starting the engine in the northern regions were improved.

The AZ engine series includes the following models:
- 1AZ FE;
- 1AZ FSE;
- 2AZ FSE. This is a similar engine to the 2AZ FE, which was produced until 2009;

The manufacturer's recommended interval of 10-12,000 km leads to ring sticking, so you need to change the oil only after 5000-6000 km (this frequency will save you more than you would spend on more frequent changes).

- crankshaft – steel forging on 5 supports with 8 counterweights, the axis is shifted by 10 mm relative to the cylinders to reduce wear, polymer gears for driving the balancer shafts are fixedly mounted on it;
- pistons – have a moderately lightweight skirt with a plastic coating, floating pins;
- block cooling system - thanks to a spacer? coolant circulation shifts to the upper part of the cylinder;
- Cylinder head - inlet ports are located closer to the vertical, the cover is made of aluminum-magnesium alloy;
- VVTi - only on the intake camshaft, phase change within 50 degrees;
- adjustment of valve thermal clearances - pushers without washers;
- attachments - oil pump inside the crankcase, trochoid type;
- cooling of pistons - nozzles in the block;
- the location of the manifolds is the exhaust tract in front, the intake receiver at the rear;
- injection - distributed, sequential in summer, paired in winter, synchronized and simultaneous with all injectors at once, depending on the ECU firmware.

An important feature for the user was the fact that overhaul of the cylinder block is physically impossible due to the non-separable design of the liners. There is no return line in the fuel system. Oxygen sensors are installed according to 4 schemes (paired, single, before or after the catalytic converter in different variations).
Advantages and disadvantages
In addition to the fact that when the timing chain breaks and jumps, the piston bends the valve, there is another unpleasant aspect of operation. During engine braking, a vacuum is formed inside the intake manifold, and lubricant vapors are sucked into the crankcase, increasing its consumption.

Other disadvantages of the motor and its modifications include:
- the block is absolutely not repairable, it can neither be bored nor sleeved;
- the thread inside the block for the cylinder head mounting bolts is either pulled out or cut off clean;
- if the piston rings are stuck, jamming is possible without the possibility of recovery;
- drive gears of balancer shafts have a low resource, as they are made of polymer;
- the service life of the plastic pump impeller is maximum 60,000 km;
- a weak overrunning clutch of the generator pulley requires replacement every 100 thousand mileage.
The advantages are a high service life of 300,000 km, a simple design for self-repair/maintenance and unpretentiousness to the quality of working fluids and fuel.
List of internal combustion engine modifications
Changes were made to the design of the basic power unit twice, resulting in two modifications:
- 2AZ FSE – power boost up to 163 hp. with direct injection, the engine was produced until 2010, had a compression ratio of 11 units;
- 2AZ FXE - Atkins-type modernization, hybrid engine with a compression ratio of 12.5, 130 hp. s or 150 l. pp., camshafts with original cam shapes were used.

Accordingly, the cylinder head in these versions is not interchangeable, but the same attachments are used as in the base 2AZ-FE model. The direct injection engine was mainly installed in the Toyota Avensis. The hybrid engine was used in Lexus HS 250h from 2010 to 2012, Toyota Sai, Camry AHV40, Estima, Previa and Alphard.
