Many owners of Toyota and Lexus cars have seen such an inscription on the climate control control unit of their car, but not everyone knows what it means.

Nanoe generates negatively charged ions surrounded by water molecules. They literally surround harmful particles in the air and neutralize them. However, not only in the air.

The microscopic size of the Nanoe particle - it is a billion times smaller than a particle of water vapor - and a long lifespan, six times longer than the lifespan of a regular negative ion, helps actively spread and eliminate allergens, viruses, bacteria, spores, dust and, of course, unpleasant odors.

Ionized water molecules do not react with nitrogen contained in the air, therefore they are safe for human breathing.

It all seems like magic. I won't surprise anyone by saying that the Camry is an amazing car. Simple, and in some places even simple, but always popular, amazingly expensive and always liquid on the secondary market. The seventh generation fully corresponds to all these descriptions: having appeared in 2011, it inherited from its grandmother with the XV30 index not only the platform, but also the base engine, while receiving a portion of evolutionary changes. Do you think this had any impact on sales? It’s only positive: Camry consistently ranked in the top 20 most popular models on the Russian market and, for example, in 2021 overtook not only Volkswagen Tiguan and Kia Sportage, but also Lada 4×4, Renault Logan and Chevrolet Niva. Even the Koreans with their Sonata and Optima could not keep up with its results. And six-year-old cars are now being sold for the same money they were sold for new. Although in the case of Toyota this is not surprising. Let's delve a little deeper into this mild craze and see what budget you should approach when buying a Camry, whether there are regions in which it is unpopular, and what you will generally have to face when searching.

How much does the normal option cost?

Camry remained true to its ideals: naturally aspirated engines, classic automatic transmissions and a consistent image drove sales even when strong currency fluctuations began to reshape prices. It did not require any all-wheel drive, like the Nissan Teana, or turbo engines, like the Volkswagen Passat - the Japanese were already steadily collecting banknotes from private buyers, corporate clients, large taxi companies and government tenders, sometimes throwing a couple of logs into the regularly blazing fire in the form of special versions. About 30 thousand cars were always sold per year. At the same time, Camry’s liquidity keeps the secondary market in good shape: there are about 3 thousand cars on sale, which is a lot, but not very much, especially considering the high prices for used copies. After all, as it turns out, without a million you still can’t approach the previous generation Camry.

It is especially interesting to consider prices on the secondary market, remembering how much these cars cost new in those years. From 2011 to 2014, the base Camry could be bought for a million, and the top version with a V6 cost 1.4-1.5 million. Nowadays, the cheapest cars of these model years are consistently asking 750-800 thousand, and these are clearly well-worn cars from corporate fleets and taxis. And sellers estimate the most expensive pre-restyling copies at 1.1-1.3 million rubles! In general, those who say that a car is a bad investment have simply never bought a Camry. And even though this is a joke, there is clearly some truth in it. With restyling, prices rose both in the past and now. Since 2015, after the fall of the ruble exchange rate, prices went up, and the car began to cost at first from 1.3 to 1.9 million, and in 2017 another hundred thousand more, reaching the level of 2 million rubles. This is noticeable on the secondary market: cars from 2015-2016 cost at least 900-950 thousand, and the newest ones cannot be bought for less than 1.2-1.3 million rubles. Well, the maximum prices for used Camrys are finally flying into the sky: from 1.6 million for 2015-2016 to 2 million and above (!). And if you think that by discarding the “cosmonauts” you will get more reasonable price tags, then you are mistaken.

There are few cars from 2011 on sale, and it is difficult to focus on their average prices, but copies of 2012-2013 cost on average from 900 thousand to a million rubles. The first restyling in 2014 immediately raises the average price by one hundred thousand - up to 1.1 million. The full post-restyling year 2015 on the secondary market has two price peaks: at 1.15-1.2 and 1.25-1.3 million rubles. And then average prices rise not by the usual 50 thousand or even 100 thousand per year: if for cars in 2021 they ask for an average of 1.35 million, then for 2017 it is already 1.5 million and higher, and for 2018 - th about 1.6 million. Thus, the budget for purchasing a Camry greatly depends on the desired age of the car: practice and the Autocheck assessment service show that if with a pre-restyling car you can spend 1.1 million, then for a restyled car you should prepare at least 1.3-1.4 million rubles.

Description of Nanoe functionality

The air ionization system was developed by Panasonic Corporation, which is a supplier of components for Toyota factories. The ionizer first appeared in 2008 on Toyota Premio cars; the technology was designated Ion Plasmacluster.

To supply ions, a ventilation duct located on the driver’s side and central air ducts are used. When the grille is closed with a standard damper or foreign objects, the ionization system does not work. The manufacturer indicates that the supply of ions is possible only when the air conditioning fan is turned on and when the flow is supplied in the direction of the driver’s head and feet. When switching the direction of air flow to the windshield, the ionizer is automatically turned off.

The main emphasis is attention to the road

When a few years ago the President of Toyota said that all future models would receive a new design that would make people on the road pay close attention to Toyota cars, no one naturally understood what he was talking about.

But when the new Prius appeared on the market, everything fell into place. True, we must admit that the new generation of Prius turned out to be very, very contradictory in appearance. But it is quite possible that it takes time to get used to the unusual and extraordinary. After all, you must admit, we are still accustomed to the incredible appearance of new Lexus cars, which frightened the public with their unusual radiator grille (“crooked mouth”).

How does ionization work?

The air ionizer on the Toyota Camry is located inside the air conditioning unit; after turning on the unit, negatively charged particles ranging in size from 20 to 50 nm are supplied to the air. On the outer surface of the particles there are water molecules, which allow them to trap foreign impurities.

Due to the presence of water molecules, the lifespan of the ion is increased, which is able to move a long distance from the generator.

The flow of negatively charged particles occurs under the influence of increased voltage (up to 6 kV); the ionizer is equipped with a voltage converter.

By using water molecules, it is possible to filter compounds containing nitrogen from the air. When operating the Nanoe unit, it should be taken into account that ions are formed at a temperature in the car interior of 5⁰C.

The ionizer uses atmospheric oxygen and water vapor present in the air to operate. There is no need to refuel or maintain the unit during operation. If the electronic part of the system breaks down, an error warning appears in the instrument cluster; repairs are carried out at a Toyota service center.

When the equipment operates, extraneous noise occurs that is not audible while driving (can be heard when parked when the engine is idling). The increased voltage leads to the formation of ozone, which is supplied to the interior of the car.

And with us everything is the same

As you probably already understood, with the transition to the new generation, little has changed in the technical stuffing of the Camry. This is especially true for the transmission. For those who remember the problems with the U660E automatic transmission for the 3.5 engine, everything remains the same. The same box, the same stories about a valve body mutilated by chips, clutches fried in an oil bath and gnawed gears. All this haunts those who like to drive a business car. As you know, calm driving does not lead to such consequences.

The automatic U760E 2.5-liter Camry can easily cover 200 tkm without breakdowns, and even more with timely oil changes. There are no complaints at all about the U761E box, designed to work with 1AZ (2.0).

Where is the button located?

The Nanoe touch button is located on the climate control unit (on the XV55 next to the hazard warning button). To select a function, you need to press the switch, which has a control LED indicating the current ionization of the air in the car interior. To turn off the system, you must press the button again; the indicator will go out after the ionizer stops working.

When you start the Nanoe unit, the Ion warning message appears on the multimedia center display, which goes out after a few seconds. The electronic control unit remembers the position of the switch.

If the driver temporarily turns off the engine while the ionizer is running, then after restarting the engine, the Nanoe system will continue to operate.

Do all car models have this function?

The Nanoe feature is used in the following Camry versions:

  1. In cars of the XV40 series, the ionizer was installed as an option, the system was called Ion (it was turned on and off with a button located between the control buttons for the heated front seats).
  2. In the XV50 generation, it was used only in some modifications (the presence of an ionizer is determined by an additional button located next to the alarm control key). The ionized flow is supplied to the passenger compartment through a ventilation duct located to the left of the steering wheel. To improve operating efficiency, open the air duct damper completely and select air flow to the face or legs.
  3. In cars of the XV55 and XV60 series (restyling 2021), the ionizer is installed in expensive modifications; particles are supplied into the cabin through the central deflectors and the driver's air duct. The button is located in the climate control unit.
  4. In the XV70 generation, Nanoe is available as standard equipment in the Prestige Safety, Luxe Safety and Executive Safety versions. It is not possible to order an ionizer as an option in other modifications.

We highlight the basic one among the updated Camry sedans

It all starts from 1,846,000 rubles for a “Standard” with a two-liter engine and a CVT. A sedan with a 2.5 engine will cost no less than 2,117,000. And six cylinders are at least 2,669,000.

Visually distinguishing the updated eighth-generation Toyota Camry sedan from its predecessor is not easy. Even the journalistic cliche about “cosmetics” cannot be matched. The frame of the wide radiator grille has been changed: sleek C-shaped decorative inserts can be black, silver or chrome, depending on the configuration. The design of the wheels has changed - but you can hardly notice it while driving.

Only the GR Sport version is easily recognizable, replacing the S-Edition. Sport, however, comes down solely to styling and does not affect technique. But the bright red body with a black roof at least stands out from the black and white mass of other Camrys. You can order such a flashy car with two older engines. Moreover, the six-cylinder GR Sport is distinguished by transparent lights, black window frames, wheels and moldings.

The “brave” hand of the interior designer only replaced the decorative trims above the glove box and repositioned the multimedia screen with central air deflectors in the manner of the RAV4. Thus, the touchscreen with a diagonal of seven or nine inches now rises above the front panel. The simple interface is not annoying.

We are pleased with the real buttons on the sides of the screen, the response speed and support for the Apple CarPlay/Android Auto protocols. The graphics of the standard maps are depressing, but Toyota hopes for help from Yandex services still under development. Otherwise, we have before us a thoroughly studied spacious Camry interior with comfortable seats and good visibility. The graphics on the trip computer screen, the location of the keys around the driver and the tactile sensations from interacting with them still leave much to be desired.

The highlight is the new power units. The previous ones have given way to Dynamic Force series engines of similar volume, which we already know from the RAV4 crossover. The six-speed automatic transmission has also been retired. The base 150-horsepower 2.0 engine is now paired with a Direct Shift-CVT CVT (see “Technology” below). The traditional “hydromechanics” is retained in version 2.5 with a power of 200 hp, but there are now eight gears. Camry 3.5 is technically unchanged.

The combination of a two-liter engine with a CVT is primarily responsible for the freshness of driving sensations. The old automatic was not known for its efficiency: it took theatrical pauses before engaging a downshift. It happened that you hit the right pedal, but while you were waiting for a response, you already forgot what you wanted. The variator, as expected, treated the Camry. Good connection through the accelerator, quicker starting from a standstill, faster acceleration on the move and more comfortable overtaking outside the city. True, it became a little noisier under load.

The claimed acceleration time to 100 km/h has been reduced from 11 seconds to nine and a half. It’s unlikely that the Camry is really capable of this, but by the speedometer reaching a hundred, the updated sedan wins back two or even three parts from the pre-reform one. We specially conduct parallel launches on the runway of a small airfield near Krasnodar. However, what is much more important is that Toyota with a CVT is noticeably more flexible during exercises of 80–100 km/h and 100–120 km/h. There is no talk about sporting ambitions, but the unpleasant feeling that you are superfluous on the highway no longer arises.

There is not such a contrast between the old and new 2.5 modifications as there is with the two-liter ones, but the changes are still noticeable. An increase of 19 horsepower and 12 N•m allows the updated Camry to be a little livelier throughout the entire speed range. No increase in noise or vibration load from the A25A-FKS engine with combined injection was noticed. The eight-speed automatic transmission works faster and smoother than the previous six-speed gearbox.

Mutual understanding with the car is more developed, and, accordingly, moving around in it is more comfortable. However, if we abstract from comparisons with the pre-Restyle, there is still a noticeable hesitation on kickdown, while the transmission changes several gears down before sharp acceleration. After a couple of anxious overtakings on two-lane roads in the Krasnodar region with a dense flow of trucks, I move the lever to the manual control position for the “automatic” and before the maneuver I select the required gear.

Last year's comparative test of the Camry with the Kia K5 prompted the Toyota representative to contact Drive for additional comments, in particular about the impact of tires on the final balance. And look, the test sedans with 17-inch wheels sport the thoroughbred Continental tires from the Premium Contact line, for which we praised the Koreans. True, Toyota installed the more recent sixth-generation Kontik only on pre-reform demonstration vehicles, and chose the outdated Premium Contact 5 as a conveyor solution.

This model entered the market in 2012. The press office refuses to comment on why they chose her. It seems that the change of supplier is more likely to have an image effect - after all, tires from the premium line of the European manufacturer were used. At least it didn't get worse. The Camry's suspension is generally left unchanged, and the two-liter Toyota on 17-inch wheels still smooths out small bumps better and transmits less vibration to the steering wheel than the 200-horsepower 2.5 version, shod in the 18-inch Turanza T005 A.

The list of targeted updates continues with the Connected mobile service for the Luxury Safety package - in other words, an application that allows you to monitor the condition of the car. And the Toyota Safety Sense complex is now trained to reduce speed in turns when using adaptive cruise control, adjust its operation to the requirements of road signs and keep the car in the center of the lane. In addition, the radar is capable of monitoring oncoming traffic when turning at intersections and applying emergency braking in case of danger.

Effect after ionization

When the ionizer operates, the content of bacteria and mold spores decreases. Research conducted by Panasonic showed that in a 45-liter container, after a day of operation of the Nanoe unit, the number of microorganisms was 0.3% of the initial value. Additional experiments revealed that ions are capable of destroying a number of bacteria in 4 hours (for example, the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus).

The water molecules contained on the surface of the ions increase the humidity of the air inside the car. Charged particles do not have a negative effect on people's skin and hair. When the system is turned on, unpleasant odors (for example, dampness) disappear; if air flavorings were used in the car, the ionizer will remove this smell as well.
