Factory equipment
A wheel is a part of a car. It allows the car to move and transfers the vertical load of the vehicle to the ground. Softens mechanical impacts, dampens vibrations from contact with the road. The maneuverability, controllability, and aerodynamics of the car depend on the wheel.
In Toyota assembly shops, cars are equipped with wheels of the original, factory configuration. When engineers develop a car model, they know what requirements it will meet. On the Toyota RAV4, the wheel size meets the requirements of a parquet SUV.
Crossover modifications are divided into 5 generations. Each is equipped with its own standard wheels.
Wheel size by generation:
- the first - since 1994 16 inches;
- the second - from 2001 17 inches, from 2005 - 18;
- third - 18 inches;
- fourth and fifth - from 2021 18-19 inches.
All versions use stamped wheels as standard. Changing them to cast and forged ones is acceptable.
Main settings
The manufacturer indicates the wheel parameters in the technical passport of the vehicle. To understand the letter and numerical designations, we understand the components of the wheel:
- The disk is a structural element; a tire is mounted on it. It is connected to the rim and transmits the rotation of the axle to the tire.
- Hub - needed to mount the disk on the axle.
- Rim – connects the tire to the disk.
- Reach - wheel protrusion. The smaller it is (in mm), the more the wheel protrudes outward. The higher the protrusion value, the deeper the disc is recessed into the machine.
If we take the 2014 Toyota RAV4 modification, the standard parameters are deciphered by components.
Tire 225/65 R17:
- 225 – tire width, in mm;
- 65 – ratio of profile height to width, in%;
- R17 - tire diameter, in inches. R – denotes radial type.
Disc 7 x 17 ET39:
- 7 – rim width, in inches;
- 17 – rim diameter, in inches;
- ET39 – offset value.
PCD (Drilling): 5*114.3 – number of holes for fastening*circle diameter of their centers.
About wheel bolt pattern on Toyota
Reading time: 6 minutes
Japanese Toyota cars are widespread on domestic roads and enjoy great popular love. They serve their owners for many years, with excellent driving characteristics, reliability and quality. The article will talk about the bolt pattern of Toyota models, as well as the features of the wheels, disks and tires installed on these cars.
2008 Toyota Corolla bolt pattern
The 2008 Toyota Corolla belongs to the 10th generation, which was produced until 2012 in a sedan body. This is one of the most popular Toyota cars on modern Russian roads. Drivers value this model primarily for comfort, convenience, handling and reliability. Wheel replacement is usually necessary to replace factory iron wheels with cast or forged ones for decorative purposes. Tires are replaced with the change of seasons and as the tires wear out.

What is the wheel pattern on the 2007 Toyota Avensis and Land Cruiser 200
The mid-size Toyota Avensis passenger car and the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 SUV are outwardly very similar cars. Moreover, their rims have five holes for bolts and are similar in appearance. Below are the wheel bolt patterns for these two vehicles.
The 2007 Avensis and Land Cruiser 200 cars have bolt patterns of 5x100 and 5x150, respectively. The disc offset on the Avensis ranges from 35 to 38 mm, on the Land Cruiser - 40 mm.
What are the differences
The dimensions and parameters of the wheel rims of these two models have a significant difference. These bolt sizes differ in the following parameters:
- the diameter of the circle on which the bolts are located - for Avensis 100 mm, for Land Cruiser 200 150 mm;
- disc offset - 40 mm for Land Cruiser and 35 for Avensis;
- diameter of the central hole.
Tire size for Toyota
Different Toyota models have different tire sizes. They depend on the size of the wheels, rims, wheel bolt pattern, and parameters of the car’s wheel arches. Tires are replaced regularly by the owners. Below we will consider suitable tire sizes for some of the Toyota models.

Toyota RAV4
As you can see, the tires installed on different generations of Toyota RAV4 can be of different sizes, so you need to know exactly the generation and year of manufacture of the car when replacing or purchasing tires. The Rav 4 bolt pattern is the same for all generations - 5x114.3. This bolt pattern with similar circle diameters and offset is similar to the bolt pattern of the Mark 2, Hi-Ace, Previa and Toyota Picnic models.
"Toyota Carina"
Below are the tire sizes for the 6th and 7th generations, as the most common on the roads:
- Toyota Carina VI (T190) (years of production - from 1992 to 1996) - this generation is equipped with tires in standard sizes 175/70 R14, load index 84-85, speed index S;
- Toyota Carina VII (T210) (years of production - from 1996 to 2001) - the latest produced modification of the Toyota Carina involves a variety of tire sizes: 165/80 R13, 175/70 R14, 195/60 R14, 195/55 R15, 185/ 65 R14.
On Toyota Carina of different generations and years of manufacture, installed tires can be of different sizes. To correctly select the right tires, you need to know exactly the generation and year of manufacture of the car when replacing or purchasing tires.
Toyota has long become a truly popular car in our country. “Corolla”, “Camry”, “Land Cruiser” and other models are constant on domestic roads and are valued by drivers; they are improved by them to suit their needs and preferences.
When to replace wheels and tires
The condition of the wheels is a constant concern for the driver. Change tires, rims or the entire wheel.
Tires provide connection between the car and the road surface. They expel water and soil from under the wheel at the point of contact with the road. They provide traction and help control vehicles.
The outer part of the tire, the tread, serves these purposes. The relief pattern absorbs friction and mechanical impacts from impacts. This is how the tread saves the tire.
In the off-season, tires are changed: winter - for summer, and vice versa.
The difference between seasonal tires is the size and tread pattern.
On winter tires it is rough, deep, with studs, which ensures good contact with slippery roads. Replacing seasonal tires is prescribed in the traffic rules, and inspectors monitor compliance.
But tires are changed for other reasons:
- Tire wear. The protectors have worn off and become 1.6 mm. This is a critical indicator, after which you cannot ride on tires. “Bald” tires will not hold the car on a wet road. Measure the tread height with a device or at a service station.
- Uneven wear. When tire pressure is not monitored, the edges or center of the treadmill wear out. If one side is worn, the wheel alignment is off. Unevenly worn tires affect the vehicle's directional stability. This is a common cause of accidents.
- Mechanical damage. During use on bad roads, tires get holes and ruptures. The cord is exposed and the frame delaminates. These tires are replaced.
- Tire age. The state standard determines the service life of tires at 5 years. The protector may not yet wear off, but exposure to sunlight, temperature changes, and chemical reagents lead to loss of elasticity. Such a tire will not save you on a winter road.
- Geometry violation. When the cord is deformed, the car shakes, throws from side to side, and an emergency situation is possible. The cord runs along the edge of the tire and holds the tire to the rim. The geometry is checked as follows: run the wheel on a flat surface. If it rolls to the side, the tire is disposed of.
Discs are changed when they receive mechanical damage on a bumpy road or if you want to change the appearance of the car. Their condition is affected by reagents and “meeting” with curbs.

Decoding the markings of wheels and tires on Toyota Rav 4
For example, R17 5×120 6.5J ET48 (see photo):
- PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) diameter of the center circle of the mounting holes: 87 mm;
- Disc radius: 17;
- Number of holes 5;
- Fastener type: M12 – stud diameter;
- Thread size (pitch): 1.25;
- Center hole diameter: 64 mm;
- Pressure (front / rear): 2.1 / 2.1 bar.
PCD parameter: distance between the centers of opposite holes. Measure the value with a ruler without removing the wheel. For a five-bolt structure, the resulting distance must be multiplied by a factor of 1.05.
Rim offset (“ET”): The distance between the point where the rim meets the hub and the middle of the rim width. Designation: DEPORT, OFFSET. The offset is positive if the plane does not extend beyond the point of contact, otherwise the offset is negative. The further the rim is from the body, the more the offset tends to zero.
- D is the diameter of the central hole, measured in millimeters.
- J, H and subsequent alphabetical symbols indicate the markings of the humps on the rim flange. Symmetrical, asymmetrical and combined.
- The “Hump” is a protrusion on the rim for a tubeless tire. When moving, the “rails” hold the tire beads, preventing depressurization.
Numerical characters indicate the release date, month, year.
- TUV is an abbreviation for the regulatory authority for compliance with quality standards.
Maximum wheel load: the unit of measurement depends on the country of manufacture of the rubber and rim.
What is the effect of installing extra dimensions on a Toyota Rav 4?
The size of tires and wheels installed on a car influence its technical characteristics. The instruction manual indicates the recommended and acceptable dimensions.
For a driver who uses the car as a means of transportation, the factory rim sizes are more than enough. In case of tuning, changes in standard characteristics, dynamic indicators, re-shoe the car with non-standard wheel sizes.
List of characteristics that can be changed by installing non-standard wheel sizes:
- Controllability;
- Road grip;
- Sharp, responsive steering wheel;
- Hydroplaning;
- Comfort;
- Noise level;
- Combined cycle fuel consumption;
- Tread wear.
Recommendations for disc care
- Check wheel balancing on a special diagnostic stand in the workshop. If deviations are detected, restore the geometry of the structure. It is impossible to “reanimate” the disk on your own due to the lack of necessary equipment;
- If you find cracks or dents on the rim, contact a service station for preventive maintenance and rolling;
- At high and medium speeds, avoid getting into holes and potholes. The disc is deformed, the seal is broken, the tire cord is damaged;
- Monitor the tire pressure; it should not differ from that recommended by the manufacturer. If there is a deviation, pump it up yourself, contact the service station;
- Observe the transition to summer and winter modes. In summer, the tire pressure is 0.15 atm higher, in winter it is lower by the same amount. The parameters are specified in the vehicle operating instructions;
- Tighten the rim nuts with a torque wrench. Excessive tightening will cause the studs to break, while too little will cause them to unscrew. Which will lead to a collision on the road with an oncoming traffic participant.
In sunny weather, cast aluminum wheels are less susceptible to external damage. But in slush, ice, when the road is strewn with chemicals, the rim is susceptible to corrosion. This provokes peeling of the paint, destruction of the molecular composition, and a decrease in the strength of the structure.
Wash your wheels as they get dirty. Since it is unlikely that you can clean it properly with a rag, use high-pressure compressors. Equipment of this class is available at many service stations, workshops, and service centers.
Systematic polishing removes scratches. First clean the wheel from dirt, dry it thoroughly, and then treat it with a chemical. Wipe with a cloth several times.
Store wheels in a hanging position, do not stack them on top of each other. Clean off any dirt, dry, and wrap in cellophane. Some motorists practice applying an aerosol to the surface before preservation.
The average service life of original wheels is 160 – 190 thousand km. Subject to a moderate driving style, the replacement interval will increase by a third. The service life of tires does not exceed 65 - 75 thousand km.
What kind of wheels can be installed on Toyota RAV4
The abbreviation in the name of the crossover “RAV” means that the car is intended for recreation and hiking. “4” – four-wheel drive.
There are special requirements for the wheels of such machines.
What kind of disks are there:
- Stamped - the most common option, comes as standard for the Toyota RAV4. They do not split when they fall into a hole, and if they bend, they are easy to repair. These discs are made of steel. Disadvantage: heavy weight. And the unsightly appearance is covered with caps.
- Cast light alloys - lighter in weight than stamped ones, made of aluminum and magnesium alloy. When they fall into a hole, they split and cannot be restored. Outwardly they are attractive, manufacturing technology helps to give them any shape. Thermally conductive material cools the brake system well. Light alloy wheels are more expensive than stamped ones.
- Forged ones are light and durable. They do not crack when the wheel falls into a hole. But all the impact energy falls on the suspension. The choice of configuration is limited by manufacturing technology. The cost is at the level of light-alloy analogues.
Wheels are selected for the car according to the characteristics recommended by the manufacturer. The car suspension is designed for wheels, so all parameters are observed.
The technical data sheet indicates “native” and acceptable options.
Car owners with RAV4 take larger tires. The wheels are of a different diameter, different offset, smaller tire width. But the PCD must not be violated: the mounting holes of the discs and the car must match perfectly.
When choosing new disks, make sure that the center hole (the central hole of the disks) matches the factory one.
Evolution of the RAV4
The prototype for the creation of the RAV4 was the Toyota Celica GT-Four, which was popular at that time, but is no longer produced today. The version with a three-door body was the first to be launched into production, but a year later models with five doors also appeared.
The engines were two-liter, with a power of 178 and 135 hp. The car was equipped with a manual transmission or automatic transmission, and could have drive on all 4 wheels, or only on the front ones.
The first generation of RAV4 appeared on official sale in Russia, which is why so many of these cars run on our roads.
First generation change: RAV4 -II
Despite the restyling carried out in 1998, already in 2000 a complete generation change was made. The new version retained the body and drive options, but added engine modifications with smaller and larger displacements.

Toyota RAV 4 in the third generation
The next regeneration of the RAV4, which lost the 3D version, was introduced in December 2005 in Canada and North America. In these countries, versions with an extended body and an engine capacity of 3.5 liters were sold.
In 2010, the car was updated, mainly affecting the image and control, and the 2.0 and 2.4 liter engines began to produce more power. In 2011, a version with a long (2.66 m) wheelbase was added, called the Toyota RAV4 III LWB.
In Russia, the third generation model range went on sale only in mid-2010, in the form of a modernized crossover of the 2005 model, which is shown in the photo.
But later it was also modernized, changing not only the external attributes, which were very similar to Camry, but also the design of the wheels. At the same time, the number of horsepower in the two-liter engine was reduced, which was due to the peculiarities of calculating transport taxes in the Russian Federation.

IV generation
In November 2012, the 4th generation of this crossover was presented in Los Angeles, and sales began a few months later. The car has gained a lot in size; the spare tire is now mounted not on the back door, but is located in the trunk.
True, now it’s a re-roll wheel, not a full-size wheel. In this generation, the RAV4 reached unprecedented heights, and by 2021 it became the best-selling crossover in the world.
Let's get acquainted with the modifications and wheel sizes:

7Jx17 5/114.3 ET45
7.5Jx18 5/114.3 ET45
7Jx17 5/114.3 ET39
Note: The fifth generation of this RAV 4 crossover was already presented in 2018 in the USA, but has not yet gone on sale in Russia.
Parameters of standard nuts
In the basic configuration of the Toyota RAV4, alloy wheels are secured with studs and nuts. This is not a universal fastener; it can be replaced with M12x1.25 threaded bolts.
When they are used to replace a rim, make sure that the parameters of the disks (old and new) match. If you replace a stamped disk with a cast one, use longer fasteners, be it bolts or studs. Cast products are thicker than steel.
Also monitor the contours of the recesses in the holes of the disk. They must fit perfectly to the supporting surface of the fastener. It is located immediately under the head of the bolts and nuts, and can be conical or spherical in shape.
If the pressing surface does not line up, when you tighten the bolts and nuts, everything seems to be screwed in securely. But when moving, the seat becomes deformed and crumbles, and the new disk will be irretrievably lost.
Locks are used to prevent wheel theft. In place of one of the fasteners, a bolt with a unique head or a non-standard nut is installed. For RAV4 they are suitable from the Farad 20156SL or McGard 21156 model range. The secrets must have a standard crossover thread size of 12x1.5 mm.
Wheel size and bolt pattern for Toyota Rav 4
The Rav 4 bolt pattern is directly related to the name of this model. The fact is that the name of this crossover contains the number “4”. It indicates that this car has all-wheel drive. Thus, it is designed for active recreation. That is why its manufacturer produces a wide range of wheels for it all over the world. In this regard, the owner of a crossover can install different types of them on it in order to improve its performance and appearance.
- Rav 4 wheels are cast, stamped, forged
- Wheel parameters are encrypted
- Fastening elements are selected separately
- The manufacturer recommends installing standard wheels
- Factory rims do not require adapters
Rav 4 wheels are cast, stamped, forged
The first generation Rav 4 could only be equipped with wheels with a diameter of 16 inches. Starting in 2001, on second-generation models it was possible to install wheels with a diameter of 17 inches instead. And in 2005, 18-inch wheels were added to them. In 2008 cars, as well as in all third and fourth generation cars, the wheels remained the same, but in 2021 they have increased by another inch. They began to be installed on crossovers of the fourth and fifth generations.
Interesting! You can install all types of wheels on Toyota Rav 4.
The “Quad” is universal in terms of disks. So you can install cast, stamped and forged varieties on it. At the same time, the standard equipment is content with ordinary inexpensive stamped disks. Thus, having purchased a basic model, the owner can change its wheels in order to improve the technical characteristics of the car or make its appearance pleasant.
Wheel parameters are encrypted
In total, Toyota produces 6 variants of 16-inch wheels for the Rav 4, 6 - 17-inch, 3 - 18-inch and 1 - 19-inch. An example of a code that can be applied to a wheel: 7JX17ET45 225/55R17. It stands for this: Wheel rim width, measured in inches – values 6J-7.5J. Wheel rim diameter in inches – 16-19. Reach in millimeters - ET35-45. The size of wheels installed on a car cannot be arbitrary, as it must take into account the size of the tires.
Important! All RAV4 models have the same bolt pattern.
It must be remembered that the bolt pattern for all Rav 4 crossovers is the same. It is 5x114.3 millimeters. From a technical point of view, it consists of 5 holes. They are arranged in a circle with a diameter of 114.3 millimeters. In English this circuit is called PCD. As for the central hole or DIA, it is 60.1 millimeters.
Fastening elements are selected separately
The standard equipment of the cross includes the use of studs and nuts as fastening elements. They are designated in the metric measuring system as M12x1.25. The Toyota Rav 4 bolt pattern is not necessarily done using wheel bolts and nuts. If the car owner wants to use them to replace the rim, he must know for sure that all the parameters of the mounting holes of both the used and the new disk are the same. This must be remembered when deciding, for example, to replace stamped disks with the same new ones. In the same case, when a stamped disk is replaced with a cast one, the installation of longer studs or bolts is usually required. This is due to the fact that the discs made by casting are thicker.
Important! If you make a mistake and use the wrong fastening tools when installing a disk, it can be damaged.
When working on installing a new cast disk in place, you need to pay attention to the contours of the recesses in the holes located on them. They must not miss the supporting surface. It is located under the head with bolts and nuts and can be flat or cone-shaped.
If the fastening elements of the disk have a poor pressing surface, you may initially be mistaken and think that they are screwed securely and tightly. In the future, after several trips, you will be able to see how the seat located in the hole of the cast disk crumbles or becomes deformed. This way, a completely new disk can be permanently damaged.
The manufacturer recommends installing standard wheels
Acceptable options for replacing wheel rims, as well as the parameters of these car design elements permitted for installation, are indicated in the crossover operating manual. If these recommendations and tolerances are not followed, then it is impossible to correctly select wheels for a particular modification of the car. In addition, the recommended wheel sets are completely safe and easy to use. A non-standard kit should be installed on a Rav 4 in the case when the car owner wants to carry out tuning or improve the dynamic performance of his cross.
If you decide to make such a replacement, it may affect:
- Steering wheel response while driving.
- The quality of tire grip on the road surface, as well as their wear rate.
- The level of noise emitted by the wheels while driving.
- Fuel consumption.
Discs made of titanium and aluminum weigh the least. As a result of their installation, the vehicle's handling can be improved by several orders of magnitude, as well as its fuel consumption reduced. In addition, the parameters of tires that can be used with different wheels directly depend on road conditions. So, wide tires are good for driving on dry asphalt in the city. In bad weather or in winter, when using them, lateral drifts and aquaplaning occur more often.
Important! Wheel rims must be installed using a special tool.
Light alloys are softer than steel, which is why, at the beginning of operation, the aluminum disk at the fastening points is prone to compaction when driving. As a result, the tightening of fasteners is weakened. As a result, after making the first trips, the driver has to tighten them up. In this case, the bolts and nuts must be tightened as tightly as possible. In this case, you should not put too much pressure on the wrenches, since in this case you can break the studs. In addition, in this case it is recommended to use a special torque wrench.
Factory rims do not require adapters
When using factory wheels that have standard bolt patterns and center holes, there is no need to use adapters when installing them in place. Their standard values are: PCD - 5x114.3 and DIA - 60.1 millimeters. The minimum possible diameter set by the manufacturer is 16 inches, and the maximum is 19. At the same time, RAV 4 owners claim that wheels with a diameter of 20 inches can be installed on the crossover without any special difficulties.
Important! When experimenting with rims, you need to pay attention to the behavior of the wheel when driving.
Various experiments that the wheel arch of a crossover allows you to carry out with wheel rims must be carried out only under the condition of strict control of the behavior of the wheel when driving, especially in off-road conditions. In the base configuration of the 2021-2019 model, the reach amplitude can range from 35 to 45 millimeters. The width of the standard rim can be from 6 to 7.5 inches. If the rim width increases, then the offset indicator decreases accordingly. In any case, when installing wider wheels, you will need to use spacers. They are necessary to regulate the amount of overhang.
You must always remember that after replacing a wheel rim, the track width may increase. As a result, the crossover will become more stable when cornering. At the same time, the load on the support bearings increases. In any case, for installation on RAV 4 you need to purchase only branded disks. Products of dubious origin have low technical characteristics, which can lead to an emergency on the road.
What is the effect of installing non-standard dimensions on a Toyota RAV4?
Wheels are changed to improve the appearance of the vehicle (tuning) or to change the dynamic performance of the car.
For a vehicle this does not go unnoticed. The following characteristics change:
- steering response;
- tire grip, tire wear;
- noise level;
- fuel consumption.
Lightweight titanium and aluminum wheels improve vehicle handling and reduce fuel consumption. Tire and wheel sizes are interrelated. Wide tires are suitable for dry asphalt. On a muddy road and snow, the car skids sideways.
Aluminum wheels are softer than steel. Immediately after installation, the material begins to compact and the fasteners weaken. Therefore, after the first trips, the fastenings are tightened with a torque wrench. But without much effort, so as not to tear off the studs.
Tire markings
There are many designations applied to the Rav 4 tire, the main ones are:
- company manufacturer;
- model;
- marking;
- indices that record maximum load and speed;
- appointment;
- level of protection;
- conditions and seasonality of use.
The brand name and logo stand out from the rest of the text. Almost all manufacturers have models, and within one line there are always tires with different sizes and characteristics.
Decoding tire size
How is the marking indicating the tire size deciphered? For example, in the marking 225/65R17, the number 225 is the distance from the inner border of the tire, filled to normal levels with air, to the outer border (width, measured along the side surface). The number 65 indicates the ratio of profile height to width. The parameter is expressed as a percentage. R is a radial type, there is also a diagonal type, but it is rare. The number 17 is the diameter of the stamping or casting Rav 4, expressed in inches. The size of tires made in the USA is designated differently; here everything is in inches.
It is worth noting that when replacing standard stamping with casting, you need to pay attention to the deepening of the mounting holes. Old fasteners may not fit - on nuts the base can be flat, conical or spherical.
Tire markings for different seasons
The M+S designation means that it is suitable for riding in mud and snow. A European version with less severe winters, when there is more dirt on the roads (mud is the first letter). The version of tires that in Russia is called winter is considered abroad, rather, arctic.
All-season models are marked with the inscriptions AS (i.e. All Seasons), AGT (All Grip Traction). R+W is applied to products for the cold season, and Frost is purely Rav 4 winter tires.
On the side surface you can see:
- AW (i.e. Any Weather) - for any weather;
- A/T (All Terrain) – for driving on any terrain;
- Rain, Water, Aqua – for driving in rainy weather (an umbrella can be drawn instead of the inscription).
As summer tires for the Rav 4, you can use all-season options from various brands.
