How to install cruise control on a Toyota Corolla: step-by-step instructions

Installing cruise control on a Toyota Corolla car quite often causes some difficulties for car enthusiasts who decide to carry out this process with their own hands. The fact is that this system is quite complex, due to which it is necessary to pay a lot of attention to detail and comply with many rules and requirements. Neglecting them may result, at best, in the fact that the cruise control simply will not turn on. If it breaks down during operation, some other parts of the car may also fail, which will lead to accidents.

What kind of system is this

Cruise control is one of the most useful functions of a modern car. Its essence is that the speed of the car is maintained automatically. In this case, the driver may not press the gas pedal.

The option records the speed developed at the time of activation and limits it to a given limit until it is turned off. On descents the system reduces the speed, and on ascents it increases.

By default, this system is supplied to Toyota Corolla only in the Prestige configuration and higher. Naturally, its cost is significantly higher than the price of a standard Comfort, and not everyone can buy such a car. For example, relative to the Corolla 150, the difference in the price of these configurations can reach 150 thousand rubles, which quite logically becomes an obstacle to purchasing a more expensive model. However, you can equip your car with the cruise control option on your own.

History of the creation of the cruise control system

Before we talk about how to install this system in a car, let's dive into history and find out when it was first used on a car. The system originated a long time ago, back in the 50s of the last century. The first test vehicle was the domestic GAZ 21.

It was primitive, its work was based on reading the speed of rotation of the driveshaft and, through a solenoid, the supply of fuel in the combustion chamber of the engine of this machine was controlled. Later, a more modern ACC system appeared - adaptive cruise control. This happened in 1997 and the first subjects were BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota, which, by the way, became one of the first subjects.

Today, this system is installed in most modern cars. Let’s finish the story here and move on directly to choosing cruise control and installing it in our Toyota.

Preparing for installation

It is best to visually depict the installation process on a machine that, chronologically, was produced somewhere in the middle between 90 and 160 models.

Therefore, the installation procedure will be considered on a 2008 Toyota Corolla 120 (actually released in 2007) with a 1.3-liter 1NR-FE engine with a manual transmission. The car is something in between in technological terms between cars produced in 2004, 2011 and 2021, which is why this example was chosen.

So, the intricate assembly process begins. The first step is to buy a steering column switch, which will be responsible for turning the option on and off, as well as a wire to it. You will only need one, but it is better to take two or three in reserve (for example, a breakdown may occur when installing it). In addition, you need to purchase a spiral wire, caps and a steering column plug. You can assemble this small “collection” in almost every good auto parts store, and the costs will not hit your wallet too much. You also need to prepare your tools. For the entire procedure you will need a cross-shaped cue ball, a T30 sprocket and a 19mm socket wrench.

Features of operation

Those who have driven cars equipped with standard cruisers will most likely not be attracted to such products - they are not very convenient to use and look unrespectable. But if such toys are new to someone, they may well come in handy.

Isn’t it dangerous to drive with these devices if they suddenly fail? After all, we interfered with the standard electrical equipment, breaking some of the car’s control circuits... We checked that when the power from both systems is turned off, the ability to control the car remains. Therefore, the manufacturers of both devices did not violate the old principle of “do no harm.”

I constantly want to press the new steering column “lever”, which also “breathes” along with the steering column casing.

The remote control is not backlit - on a dark country road you will have to manipulate it by touch. The indication only works at the moment of operation.

After installing the Drivenge system, you will have a steering column “lever”, which in fact is not a lever at all, but simply a fixed element with three buttons.

Connecting the system

Installing cruise control on a 2008 Toyota Corolla manual will proceed in several stages. First you need to turn the steering wheel so that the wheels are parallel to the central axis, that is, straight.

The ignition must be turned off. You need to remove the terminals from the battery to open the circuit. It is also advisable to wait 3-4 minutes after this.

Then you should pull out the plugs located on the edges of the steering column and under it. As a result, you will have access to small compartments from which you need to unscrew the bolts with a T30 sprocket, one of which has a toothed side.

Then you need to dismantle the airbag and disconnect all the wires that interfere with this. The part must be handled carefully so as not to damage this rather vulnerable mechanism. Next, you need to mark on the steering wheel and steering shaft where the pistons will be installed. There is a large nut in the center of the wheel that holds the entire piece in place. It needs to be unscrewed with a 19 key. It is fixed firmly enough, so you don’t have to spare any effort. The steering wheel can now be removed. Then you should disconnect the lower casing, all wires (including the twisted one) and three latches located at 4, 5 and 8 o'clock.

The connection of new components begins. First of all, you need to secure the spiral wire in place of the twisted one. After installation, it is advisable to immediately latch it and also replace other wires so as not to forget to do this in the future. Then you should put on the cover that was removed earlier and unscrew the safety stop, since it prevents you from removing the cable while moving.

Having completed these manipulations, you can return the steering wheel itself to its place. It is important here to save all the notes made earlier. It is on them that the switch will be installed.

After this, you need to secure the airbag. The remaining parts are assembled in the reverse order to what was discussed above, with the only change: new plugs are installed. The terminals are reconnected to the battery. You can now use cruise control.

Jetter

JET-CRUISE is a cruise control option for TOYOTA, DATSUN, LADA, HYUNDAI, KIA cars.

Order cruise control.

For your comfort, the new device combines 3 functions:

1) cruise control;

2) message about exceeding the permissible speed;

3) jetter control.

All JET-CRUISE functions are controlled using a radio key fob or a wired key fob.

The main function is to maintain a constant vehicle speed set by the driver in the range of 40-150 km/h. This reduces your fatigue.

In addition to maintaining a constant speed, the driver can increase or decrease the speed (by pressing the “+” (B) and “-” (A) buttons on the key fob, respectively), and overtake by pressing the accelerator pedal (after releasing the cruise, the vehicle will return to its previous speed). Cruise is turned off by pressing the On/Off button (C) or pressing the brake (clutch for a car with a manual transmission). If the cruise was turned off by pressing the brake (clutch for a car with a manual transmission), then pressing the Res (D) button will return the car to cruise mode, restoring the last speed.

With the alert function, you will not face fines for speeding. With the cruise control turned off, set the maximum permitted speed for a specific section of the road (by pressing the On/Off (C) and “-” (A) buttons) and enjoy the drive. The device will signal if you have exceeded the set speed. To disable the function, press the “-” button (A) in cruise standby mode.

The jetter control function allows you to select the most comfortable driving mode for you, depending on your driving style and weather conditions. Operating modes are switched using the “J/Res” button (D).

Package Included:

— cruise control unit (JC); — KAF C jetter (CH C, NH C, NIS IC, KA SC, TCU C or TOY C); — radio key fob or wired key fob.

Installing JET-CRUISE takes no more than 20 minutes.

Disappointment and joy

My surprise knew no bounds when I tried to turn it on, not a single light on the instrument panel came on (. After driving the car, I poked all the possible buttons on the cruise lever, but nothing happened!

Cruise control and all my wasted time down the drain!

Having stopped by the OD (official dealer), I asked how much the installation costs? They told me 10,000 rubles, without a lever, spiral, etc. etc.. But one guy told me that everything should work. Frustrated, I went home.

But the thoughts never left my head, I started digging up information on various forums and came across instructions for using CC (cruise control). When I completely chewed on the instructions, I decided to do everything according to the instructions.

And here I was even more surprised! He works! The car itself maintains speed, you can either increase or decrease the speed by two kilometers per hour, or pick up speed to the starting position! All functions work, just without an indication, and what the hell with it!

Conclusions:

1) I’m very happy, I’ve been driving on the highway and around the city for a year now with Toyota’s manual , it’s very convenient.

2) The lack of indication is a delicate matter, in poor configurations even the LEDs on the panel are not soldered, solder them, it will not work, you need to solder in some kind of microcircuit and flash it. It doesn’t bother me, I got used to it quickly.

3) there is no need to go to the OD, pay 10-40K rubles for something that you can do yourself and at the same time spend 500 rubles; the tools I needed were a 10-size wrench for removing terminals, and a small flat-head screwdriver.

4) My brother, looking at me, decided to put a CC on himself too. He has a 2009 Toyota corolla e140.

To bet or not to bet?

There is no clear answer. For gadget lovers, the positive emotions from “cruises” and jetters will probably outweigh the negative from the high price and unsightly appearance. Obvious disadvantages include interference with the car’s control electronics, which neither the warranty, nor the service, nor the law welcomes.

We liked the Jet-cruise KH better: it is more expensive, but easier to install. And the location of the remote control in the cabin can be adjusted to your taste.

How does cruise control work?

It does not work automatically - it is controlled by the driver. The cruise control option on the Toyota Prado 150 can be activated at a speed of at least 40 km/h. Then indicators appear on the dashboard: on/off and fixed speed.

The operating principle is simple. The servo is connected by a wire to a mechanism that is responsible for supplying gas to the carburetor.

If the vehicle is moving at the same speed, the angle of the accelerator pedal is constant. The driver turns on the cruise - the electronic unit remembers the position of the accelerator pedal and the speed.

When the speed decreases (the vehicle goes uphill), the ECU receives a signal and transmits a command to the servo drive. It changes the position of the gas pedal (its angle) so as to increase the fuel supply. The speed starts to increase.

The same principle works when vehicles descend from a mountain, when the speed begins to increase. Then the ECU sends a signal to reduce fuel consumption.

If the car has a manual transmission, the driver will need to change gears independently. In the case of automatic transmission, the process will take place without his participation.
