Toyota Corolla oil filter: purpose, types of filters, types of oil, how to choose a filter and how to change the oil

The oil filter is an important part not only of Toyota vehicles. Essentially, its role, as the name suggests, is to filter and remove harmful dirt particles from the oil as it passes through the engine, thereby avoiding premature engine failure while protecting the engine and extending its life. It also allows for efficient lubrication of hundreds of precision moving parts in a vehicle's engine. Many of these parts operate with thousands of movements per minute. Even the smallest foreign substance in an engine can create excess friction and damage. Oil filters help prevent possible engine damage.

The oil filter is an inexpensive part that needs to be replaced regularly. Its price compared to the cost of engine repair is not high, so we do not recommend saving and buying a cheap filter, since a high-quality oil filter will save you much more money.

The structure and main elements of the Toyota oil filter using the Camry XV30 as an example: 1 - Bypass valve; 2 - Filter element; 3 - Anti-drain valve; 4 - Toyota oil filter element;

Toyota oil filter structure: 1 - Bypass valve; 2 - Filter element; 3 - Check valve and valve spring;

The bypass valve (safety valve) is made of durable and heat-resistant rubber. Designed to supply engine oil to the lubrication system in the event that the oil cannot pass through the filter element, which happens when the filter is clogged, or the oil is too thick, which happens at low ambient temperatures, or pre-filled engine oil with high viscosity. Therefore, for Toyota Corolla cars that are used:

  • every day during the cold season (winter, and for some regions also the end of autumn and the beginning of spring) and the engine starts in most cases “frozen”;
  • extreme operating conditions;

... it is recommended to use an oil filter with a bypass valve located at the inlet.

Filter element (paper curtain) - designed to ensure effective filtration and purification of oil supplied to the lubrication system during the entire service life of the filter. In the manufacture of the filter element, special filter paper is used that is capable of operating at temperatures ranging from -30°C to +80°C.

The anti-drain valve is a high quality seal designed to retain oil in the filter, preventing it from flowing out of the oil system into the oil pan when the engine is not running.

The Toyota oil filter element , unlike a cartridge, is more environmentally friendly and at the same time offers the same filtration quality as cartridges.

Which to choose

Which filter to choose for Corolla?! This question is asked by every new owner (or if the quality of the current filter is not satisfied, then by an experienced Corolla owner) of a Japanese car when replacing the filter for the first time. Since the purpose of this page is to help you make a choice, there will be no advice in the style of “buy this particular filter,” but below is a list of brands that we recommend you pay attention to, and which is compiled based on the recommendations of real Corolla owners.

But before that, we still note two main, and perhaps universal, criteria when choosing.

Firstly, before you buy a filter for Toyota, you should not save! Yes, the price range for an oil filter varies significantly between some manufacturers, but the filter is not such an expensive part that you can save a large amount of money on.

Secondly, what I would like to note is the presence of counterfeits, especially popular and expensive brands. We do not recommend buying a “high-quality” branded oil filter for Corolla for cheap - not a single store will sell you for next to nothing what it can make money on. But you shouldn’t blindly buy an expensive one, assuming that it is an original filter - this is not true. We recommend taking into account reviews from Toyota car owners, who in fact have perhaps the most powerful argument when choosing.

Before buying a filter in a store or online site, you should make sure that the components for the cars are from the same seller, since returning goods is very, very bad.

Filter removal device

It often happens that the oil filter is tightened with enormous force; in addition, the sealing rubber dries to the motor, after which it is almost impossible to unscrew the part. For this, special pullers are used. For Toyota Corolla, 3 types of such pullers are used, images of which are shown below.

The oil filter puller consists of a handle, a hinge that allows you to change the device to unscrewing or tightening, a rocker arm that allows you to change the radius of the loop, and on the loop itself there are spikes that dig into the body for unscrewing.

Using this puller you can easily unscrew the Toyota Corolla filter.

Corolla E140/E150

Owners of the 150th Corolla (pre-restyling) recommend the Nitto Kogyo 4TP-121 (10013) and VIC C-110 (VIC C-113) oil filter with a check valve. These filters have proven themselves very well and do not require advertising. FILTRON PO572 (Poland), UNION C170 (Japan) and ALCO FILTERS SP991 (Germany) have also proven themselves well.

If you want to use original oil filters when changing engine oil, pay attention to those recommended by the manufacturer for the Toyota Corolla 150. For the model range manufactured before December 2008, it is recommended to use original oil filters 90915-10003 (Japan) or Toyota 90915- YZZE1 (Thailand).

Original Toyota oil filter 90915-YZZD1

For restyled cars, only a paper cartridge is recommended for replacement.

For Corolla 150 with a 1ZR-FE engine, this is a Toyota cartridge 04152-37010 (Thailand) or 04152-YZZA6, and for a model with a 1NR-FE engine, it is a Toyota cartridge 04152-40060.

Selecting a filter element for Toyota Corolla

It is recommended to install original filters for the car.

Lately there have been a lot of their fakes for Toyota Corolla E 120 and 150 2008 and other years of production, so below are the criteria by which you can distinguish which is original and which is fake.

  1. The packaging will contain the name, Toyota logo and original number (article).
  2. The serial number will be indicated on the bottom of the package, which should also be indicated on the filter itself.
  3. The case should say Denzo.
  4. The serial numbers must be indicated in white paint on the top of the case, for example, 001M 2011 8E21.

Camry V40

The Toyota Camry 40 was supplied from the factory with filter 0415231090 (the Japanese-made filter has 43 folds and a replaceable rubber band covered with a special lubricant; other manufacturing countries such as China, Korea, Thailand have up to 46 folds). But if you cannot find this oil filter, or you are not satisfied with its price, then pay attention to other original filters with numbers 04152-YZZA1 or 90915-10004.

The cost of original Toyota spare parts may not seem adequate to everyone, so in this case we turn to similar filters from other manufacturers. First of all, I would like to note the best oil filters for Toyota in terms of price and quality that can be used all year round: VIC-110 (Camry 40 2.4), VIC C-113, Knecht/Mahle OC 217. If these filters are missing, pay attention to the good proven and trusted MANN W 610/1 (3/9), Nitto 4TP-124, FRAM PH 5317. The Union Japan C123 filter is not bad, but it is not recommended to use it in winter, as there have been cases of oil squeezing out.

What does an oil filter do?

For long and proper operation of the engine, it needs lubrication of all moving parts. A special system works to solve this problem.

All parts are lubricated, but they still contact each other and wear. Their friction products in the form of microscopic particles precipitate and pollute the system. Then there are so many of these particles that the oil becomes an abrasive and only reduces the life of the power plant. To prevent this, an oil filter was invented that is integrated into the engine lubrication system. It cleans the liquid from mechanical contaminants.

Oil filter

Modern filters purify up to 95% of harmful impurities. This is not only metal, but also combustion products and other inclusions.

Prado J120

On the Prado 120 the situation is a little different, but some filters can be interchangeable. On petrol European and Arabic modifications (2.7, 3.0) a “medium” filter is installed - 90915-20003, on Prado 4.0 - 90915-20004. 20003 and 20004 are the same and completely interchangeable.

On diesel versions for the Emirates Prado 3.0, 15600-41010 is installed, but is interchangeable with 90915-20004. On 3.0 with 1KZ (UAE), a “large” oil filter 90915-30002 was installed. But it is worth noting that until 08/2006 Toyota Prado 3.0 D4D had 90915-30002 installed (they are not in the database of non-original catalogs), but since August 2006 filter 20003 and 20004 were installed from the factory. Filters 90915-20003 and 90915-30002 are NOT interchangeable .

As an analogue, the best filters are VIC C114, Nitto 4TP-126, Filtron OP 618, Purflux LS359 JS and Asakashi C101J.

On right-hand drive Prado 3.4 models for Japan, a cartridge is installed instead of a filter (number 04152-31060 for models produced from 04/2004 to 10/2006, and 04152-38010 for the model range produced from October 2006 (but they are interchangeable). Also suitable in size 04152-0R010, 04152-31030 and 04152-YZZA5.

How to change the filter element on a Toyota Corolla

The instructions are suitable for Corolla 120 (2001–2006) and 150 (2006–2012) with 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 engines.

The oil filter is replaced along with the oil, so to carry out this operation you will need an inspection pit or a lift. Before replacing, you need to drain all the old grease.

Advice. In order for it to drain better, warm up the engine a little: when it warms up, the oil will become more liquid.

Using a 14mm wrench, unscrew the drain plug and place a container under the open hole, where the old lubricant should be poured.

After draining all the oil, screw the plug back into place. In engines 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 this plug is in the same place.

The filter element itself in the Toyota Corolla is located next to the engine sump and is not fixed in any way, that is, it can simply be unscrewed. But the problem is that to unscrew it you need to have a special device called a puller. You can unscrew the part without it using the following trick:

If you do not have a puller, then there is one proven method. Its essence lies in the fact that you need to place a screwdriver on the filter and hit it with a hammer so that the housing is pierced. Now that the screwdriver is inside the case, you can use it as a lever and unscrew the part without any problems.

About choosing a puller - at the end of the article.

We make a grip and unscrew it counterclockwise, as in the photo. It is better to place a container underneath, because as soon as you unscrew the part, a lot of lubricating fluid will flow out of it. On engines 1.6, 1.8 and 1.4, the sizes of these parts will be different.

Now you can prepare a new filter element and install it on the Toyota Corolla. To do this, remove the filter membrane from the housing, after which only the metal base will remain in your hands. The photo shows the consumable housing from the 1.6 engine.

Advice. It is best to wipe the body of old used oil, which will only waste the new one.

There should be a rubber gasket in the place where the body thread ends. We take it out and install a new one, which comes complete with a fresh filter. The gasket should be slightly lubricated so that it does not rub.

After this operation, insert a fresh filter membrane and screw the filter back together. The tightening force is 25 Nm.

Now you can fill in new oil. For Toyota Corolla, it is preferable to fill in the original synthetic class 0W30.

Total oil volume for Toyota Corolla 1.6 engines from 2006 to 2014: 4.2 liters.

Just in case, after filling, it is recommended to check the lubricant level with a dipstick: it will be slightly higher than the required level, but then the level will drop slightly due to the oil spreading throughout the engine.

  • VIC O-118

Types of Oil Filters

There are four types in total:

  • mechanical;
  • magnetic;
  • centrifugal;
  • gravitational

Mechanical ones are the most primitive and most widespread. They have a regular filter element. They are further divided into two types:

  • completely replaceable;
  • Only the filter element is replaceable.

Signs of a good filter:

  • hard, inflexible body;
  • high-quality thread and rubber seal;
  • availability of high-quality valves (return and bypass).

A bad filter is defined as follows:

  • paper too thick;
  • leaky shut-off valve - because of it, oil will enter the crankcase when the internal combustion engine is running;
  • O-ring is too hard and inelastic;
  • deformed body.

Previously, filters were made completely replaceable entirely in a metal housing, which was expensive. Now we have switched to replaceable filters - it is much cheaper.
